I bought a set of these and they are fantastic as they lift up from 4 inch to 40cm.

My only concern with the others is that height may still be an issue

No - but are you sure 17cm is enough? My metal ones came from Halford (I think) and must be about 30cm.

Yea, if you can get a set of hydraulic ramps and a pump, then making your own would be a doddle. I do like them though.

I'm a skinny rake & used to wiggling under using small blocks of wood  so thought the 17cm might suffice but the extra height would be very welcome,do you use extensions on the Halfords Ramps? I looked at these a while back when i owned the Subaru, but after reading a few people having problems getting on them decided against the idea, cheers

I might have a trip down to Machine Mart they look slightly wider(CRW25) than the Halfords one's & cheaper so could pick up & the extensions aswell.

I've just checked mine

a] they are Halfords

b] the actual rise is only about 23cm - the total height including the end stop is about 30cm

c] are the 17cm ones that dimension to the platform or the top of the end stop? If the latter you're not going to be much higher than just driving onto a kerb...

d] I've had mine for years - haven't had any real problems with them apart from the difficult at times getting on them - i.e. the ramps tend to move when you drive onto them. Clearance can be an issue at times in which case I have to "ease" the gradient by driving over something else first (EDIT - just discovered that's what you need extensions for)

just get a normal set, and a set of lead on ramps. Fully down on the coilovers and that suits mine!

Cheers for all the input guys, I ended up picking up a set from Machine Mart, apparently these are same as the Halfords ones made in same factory, anyway I think these will suit me just fine, they don't seem steep but I think I'll make some extensions myself for them, I've just been looking at hard rubber trimming I wonder if this will help them grip.

Difficult driving onto ramps?

Tie 2 pieces of rope or webbing onto the bottom front of the ramps, as you drive to the ramps, stop short by about 6", tuck the surplus rope/webbing under the front of the rear wheels, then slowly drive forward and up the ramps, the rope/webbing stops the ramps from sliding forward.

DB.

I've got some identical to them that I managed to pick up from a car boot for £10

They do the job quite well :)

They're different to the Halfords ones shown on http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_175876_langId_-1_categoryId_255207 - I'm sure I didn't pay £60 though - more like £20

They're slightly different to my Halfords ones (which I've had for a few years remember) - more bracing on mine

Yours appear to be the latter?

I've tried such methods, but found that as soon as the wheel leaves the ground the ramps tend to slide - depends on your drive surface I suppose and how smooth or gravelly it is.

Yes mine are the second set, the others seemed barely wide enough for a bike tyre, they can be had cheaper on fleabay but I needed them this week as I have a few jobs to get in before Im back to work, replace bottom intercooler pipe ended up forking out 80 quid for a new one got fed up messing around with zip ties/gearbox oil change.

I've got a set like the blue ones DRJ put up, use a couple of decking planks cut to length, job's a good un

Don't think i've got decking planks lying around and the extenders are only about £15. ;)

Best Christmas ever for my car!! :D
