Just finished building my new PC

Featured Replies

OK, I know it's not in the same league as lowering suspension, or beefing up brakes - but I'm feeling just a little bit pleased with my new PC :)

It's a 1.67GHz Athlon, with 768MB of RAM - not much by modern standards, but ten times faster and twenty four times more memory than the old workhorse it will replace.

I cheated a bit by buying a ready-assembled motherboard, CPU, and heatsink "bundle", but the rest was strictly DIY - even re-jigging some of the LED plugs to fit the pins on the motherboard.

Ubuntu Linux is impressive - it auto-detected all the hardware, and installed straight off the CD - then connected to the 'net to fetch the latest security patches :) . It was even smart enough to guess that I wanted to specify a static IP address when it failed to get one via DHCP.

It'll take a while to port all the custom configuration and applications from the old box, but when it's done, I'll be folding at more than twice my current rate. Watch out, Jason! ;)

:thumbdwn:

Just when I thought I had a chance of catching you too. :P

If it makes you feel any better I now have a total of.... [does maths] 6.27ghz of CPU and 2.256 gig of RAM on my cause now - not running 24/7 though as all the comps are in my room, and I like to be able to sleep at night. The new laptop is quiet enough to leave on overnight though.

This new PC malarky is really nice after having stuck with my athlon 750 for so long. (which incidentally will be another .750ghz of speed once I get XP running on it  )

If ya gonna go like that..... ive got 29.2ghz of 24h folding powaaa :D

and 8.5gig of RAM

I sorta figured you'd be in that sort of range with your rate of knots. All good for the cause so gets a  from me. 29.2ghz? Sounds kinda nice.

I've just ordered an Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939 processor from E-buyer. :D When I get the rest of the PC it will FLY - especially compared to my existing Athon XP2000+:thumbup:

Which one of the 31 are you, Alan? There's a few names I don't recognise on there.

Aaaah! More the merrier. We're still climbing the rankings. I reckon we'll be inside the top 500 inside 10 or 12 days!

D'oh - didn't realise it was a competition. Better turn some of IBM's finest onto the task then ;)

Chris

There was an old Cray supercomputer on ebay recently.......

Of course it is. Manny & Col are in their own little tussle, but in general I like to think of it as a good team effort... And we need to pip MAX POWER :D a.s.a.p

Is the Max Power folding team anything to do with the Max Power? Most of the member's names (MarkZ_Dell, MarkZ_Dev, MarkZ_Gateway, DB1, DB1-2, DB2, DB2-2, etc.) sound more like techies than laxxers.

Installing a processor is pretty simple and not as hard as it looks. The hardest bit is unclipping the heatsink, thats if you have one of the old old clips and not the metal ones where you use a screwdriver to take off. Then all ya gotta do is put ya new processor in, whack on some arctic silver on the processor and heatsink and clip your heatsink on. :D (simplified version)

I have been updating my PC hardware on a fairly regular basis since getting my first one about 10 years ago. This means that you don't get the huge NOS whack of power that JLB will see after going from a 166Mhz to a 1.67GHz processor and shed loads more RAM :) The small increase in performance that I have seen over the last 3-4 years has led me to make a radical decision - I'm keeping my 2.2GHz with 1Gb RAM PC as it is now until I can get a 4X hit. This means I need to hang fire until (GHz processors are available. Anyone like to hazard a guess as to how long I'll be keeping my current setup? I reckon no longer than 2 years

Can someone tell me what "folding" is?

Seen it mentioned in a few places but never understood it.......

"Folding at Home" uses the spare CPU power of your PC (which would otherwise go to waste) for a medical research project. More details here - including how to jointhe team ;)

I see, thanks for that.

Will look into it over the weekend.
