Launch control dsg diesel

Featured Replies

i've always been tempted to try out the launch control on mine, but the thought of the utter mayhem & screaming when it takes off makes me think twice!

correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe u can use either "D" or "S" during launch control?

has to be in s. Try it, its great fun. Over ride changes with paddles though else it will just bounce off the limiter which is a little pointless with diesel.

Excuse my ignorance but if a diesel will do 0-60 in under 7 seconds then what will the petrol version do in standard clothing and in stage 1?

I suppose it might not be much quicker given that traction is more likely to be the limiting factor but be nice to know.

Will it do any damage to the gearbox or the cluthches?

This was described to me by the VW salesman (on the quiet) when I bought a Jetta with DSG. He reckoned if you did it more than three times you could seriously feck your clutches

Guys - WTF?!

This will put a significant amount of additonal stress and strain on your transmission and I do believe that should your super high-tech wonder of a DSG gearbox go bang, the logs from the car will demonstrate that you were behaving like a tit and deserve the £2000 bill to replace the thing :giggle:

If that was the case, the feature wouldn't be enabled or there would be a massive disclaimer in the book.

I know someone with a r32 which has more power and torque going through it and he must have done at least 30runs in one weekend at gti international a couple of years back. That's just one show and one weekend. He does countless other sprints etc and his box is still running fine.

As for the logs, that is an urban myth. I was speaking to a vw master tech and he said even if it did log it noone would have a clue where they were or how to access them. Also he said they had replaced very few dsg boxes, and no more than any manual version and apart from the early mechatronic issues which required a replacement mech unit they are ultra reliable.

Also I think if using lc more than 3 times screwed up your dsg, it would be all over the internet about it and complaints and stories that 'vw wouldn't pay 4.5k for a new dsg after they found out I used lc'

I can certainly see the argument for caution. If it were a manual clutch though then I wouldn't think anything amiss to giving it a hard boot and nor would I see it being a cause to reject a warranty claim:

"Sorry, we cannot honour the warranty, Sir, because we believe you have been making use of the acceleration performance mentioned in our sales collateral"

I think the DSG clutch pack is pretty robust and the manual clutch a far lesser rated device too, if based only on the frequent posts about uprating them on remapped manual transmission vRS. I am still not going to rush out and try it though, not that I can as I am still in limp mode.

Is it even a "feature"?

My reasoning is why do it in the first place? There is no way on earth this doesn't put additonal stress and strain on your gearbox so why act like a **** in the first place?

As for the reliability of the DSG - I put my money where my mouth is and bought one as I'm confident they are a proven technology. (thats the kiss of death isn't it?!)

I agree that the mech units can be a PITA but in general, this is a well thought out, reliable and robust technology....however doing drag starts in your £15K saloon is just not cool and certainly does nothing to reduce the likelihood of a failure and absolutely will NOT extend the life of the thing!

Still, as long as people are happy to rag the **** out of their cars like this then each to their own - just seems about the dumbest thing you can do short of sticking water in your oil!

Of course it is a feature...It used to be in the book when they were first released on Golfs. If it wasn't a feature all you would be doing is simply riding the clutch on the brakes until the clutch self destructed.

Its only the same as doing a standing start on a manual.....probably less strain in fact as the computer is controlling the clutch instead of your left foot.
