Vipre AV security stopping downloads/installations

Featured Replies

Morning

My neighbour (65), started using the internet for the first time this year, has had a couple of problems and taken his PC to the local PC shop/repairer to try and get it sorted. They have installed, at his cost, Vipre internet security/AV stuff and after setting up his internet connection again and updating Vipre, the AV is now blocking the driver for his wifi dongle and also a download of Google Chrome.

I've looked through the firewall menu and I know it should be possible to add an exception to the firewall settings, but that's the limit of my expertise. Other than removing Vipre and installing Avast or AVG (which I don't want to unless it's a last resort as he's paid for Vipre), is there a way around this?

Forget Vipre. Write off the cost. How much will he have paid if he uses it? And how much will he have paid if he doesn't use it? The same. Well why not get him to the point where he can use his computer properly then? It's not going to let him use his computer how he wants, and is basically going to be a pain in the arse all the while it's installed. It's not the answer you wanted, but honestly uninstall the thing, put Microsoft Security Essentials on instead, and let him download, install, and use stuff. People think they get better protection from paid AV, but it's not true, and even the likes of AVG are getting quite intrusive in the user experience nowadays. MSE with Windows firewall is enough protection.

I've sorted it.

I have to be mindful that it is not my computer or my money and I am not taking any money for my help - I'm was just trying to get the bloke's computer working again and, although I'd have liked to have been in a position to tell him not to pay 60 quid for an AV programme, it's not my place to.
