lots of oil next to filler cap (pic included)

Featured Replies

hello, I have attached a picture of the oil accumulated over a small period of time, is this normal?

I'm assuming oil is leaking out from the cap due to a poor seal/washer? Will a new oil cap filler fix the issue

the excess oil was removed with a quick clean with tissue

Thanks in advance for any help : )

Are you sure its not spilt oil from a oil change

When the goons who services mine when I bought it they tipped oil. Took a good few cleans to sort it. Or the seal on your cap has gone.

defo not oil change, this has accumulated over a span of 2 weeks

Ill have to buy a new seal a see how that works

cheers lads

Mine leaks slightly if the oil filler cap was replaced without both the top of the "pipe" and the rubber seal on the cap being properly cleaned (I guess it doesn't form a proper seal). I take it the cap isn't massively dirty?

Nope the oil filler cap is pretty clean tbh bud, like new

Its not a big issue, but ideally not wanting to keep having to top up

Heh ... don't blame you. ;) I do know someone who put a thin layer of card behind the rubber on their oil filler cap to get the thing to seal (they were given a new one by the dealer, which did the same thing) ...

yea it sounds like the seal on the cap has gone,

one method is to remove the cap, clean it up, run a bead of silicon around the rubber seal (not too much). leave it to dry then re-fit the cap.

thanks very much for all the help people, I'm going to try find a thin sheet of flexible plastic and cut it out the same size as the washer (in effect it will be similar to having two washers)

I will report back in a few weeks to let you all know if it worked

cheers

I noticed the same thing on mine today. I just bought the car last week and was worried something terrible is wrong with the engine. Let us know how you fix it. Thanks.

A new seal is cheap from VAG - I changed the one on my wife's Polo when it was only 6 years old, my 12 year old Passat is still on its original seal (different style of cap), so maybe VAG got it wrong when designing this cap.

Get much the same on the Felly. On mine there is a small drain hole on the low side of the body around the cap & suspect it backs up through there. Negligible though.
