Window tints

Featured Replies

I was thinking of maybe getting window tints and wanted to see what they look like on a blue octavia vrs, so could you put up some pics so I could see what they are like.

Check with your insurance company first... Just bought an estate with non-manu tints. Direct Line wanted another £70 to insure... I will be changing insurance company next year!!

This is mine with factory tints if it helps. Phil

if you post a good quality pic of your car I can easily photoshop it to have tinted windows :-) so you can see what it looks like on your car

This is a light smoked tint, cant remember the name exactly, but out of the 3 choices this was the lowest

Don't forget it has to allow 60% of light through or it is illegal.

Only glass that the driver can see directly through has to be of a certain tint. The windscreen has to allow 75% of visible light through and the front side windows 70%. Most cars glass only just meets this requirement.

What % is the above?

A local place has said they normally do a 15% dark smoke for a nearby main dealer - but that sounds very dark to me (?). Then again, the standard tints are next to nothing but probably sound quite dark on paper.......

15 % is not dark at all mine are 60 /30 , 30 is the darkest legally you can go on the front, sat inside they dont look as dark as viewing from outside, with my b pillars in black it flows better so they blend

Guys are ye seriously taking the **** here, do ye have to tell ur insurance even small details like window tint?

If you have 40% on the front and get caught, expect a tow truck home and points on your licence. Take it from someone who enforces this.

Sorry - 15% VLT, which I assume is 85% tint....

As I understand it, standard OEM

windows are 75% to 90% VLT, and at the other end of the scale, 5% VLT is limo black. The front screen must be 75% and the front sides 70% I think?

edited it it is 30 at the front, I had it done 3 years ago and dug out paperwork, it is legal I assure you. I said i want it legal

You can clearly see from the 1st pic the grass through the front window

Yep, here in the UK you have to declare evrything that is not standard factory fit, otherwise if you have a bump and they decide to go over the car then they will find it and can decalre the policy null and void!

Good fun isnt it!

Nothing over OEM is legal, ie any tint on the front is illegal.

This is what the tinters and the likes of Police Interceptors told me!

I don't see why you have to tell the insurers either tbh.

Well when they intercepted me for speeding a couple of years ago, they thought my car was cool and looked inside ,under the bonnet etc, they did not give a thought to the windows ,I am sure if they looked illegal they would have used a light meter

hmmm i wonder what the standard glass lets through - be interested to know to see if 70% tints are legal on the Octy.

As posted above, I understand that no manufacturers use actual 'clear' glass these days - the most they let through is 90%.

As for what's legal on an Octy, it's the same as all other cars - windscreen must let through 75%, front sides must let through 70% and the backs can be as dark as you like.

Interestingly for whomever suggested points and a tow truck for 60% VLT, this site suggests that might be outside the guidelines*:

http://www.carkeys.co.uk/features/law-window-tinting-2

* unless they mean 40% VLT (I.e. 60% tint - its getting confusing in this thread with a mixture of methods being used. As I understand it the VLT is the standard way of measuring this, as opposed to % blocked out.
