Is my turbo blown?

Featured Replies

Octavia TDI 2003 1.9 110hp with 118k miles. On way home tonight the car lost power, but not as severe as when it goes into limp mode. When i accelerated there was a whinning sort of noise and a tinny sound from i think the front drivers side of the engine (hard to tell). also, under any acceleration white/grey smoke belched out of the exhaust.

The car was serviced a few hundred miles ago and checked over for MOT (due next saturday). The only issue raised was the fan belt which had started to make noise, but the mechanic said once it went i should get the timing belt done as it is due in about 8-10k miles.

The smoke does't sound great to be honest.... :-(

I was about to say possible turbo hose gone but thats usually thick black smoke,

white and grey smoke is usually a good indicater of turbos on its way out

On its way out sounds positive (relatively speaking). If it hasn't completely destroyed itself, is there a possibility i could get it refurbed instead of forking out for a new one?

Thanks for the suggestion.

I suppose it's like anything, you take your chance buying second hand with no comeback, but i would be worried about spending that money and then the turbo go anyway. At least getting new/ refurb i will have some comeback. Also, really can't have the car off the road for too long as i need it for my 60mile round trip work commute as i don't have a public transport alternative (work in the a-hole of knowhere).

Thanks

Old post, but realised i hadn't closed it out.

In the end i got the car towed to the garage where i got the turbo and a few lines/ hoses etc replaced for £1,200 including labour. Did sound steep, but its a new VAG like for like turbo with parts and labour 3 year warranty should anything go wrong.

Saw you coming lol silly money

We live and learn.....

Think the Turbo was £850 or there abouts. Spoke with a different mechanic who fixed my exhaust a few months later who said i should have came to him as he is the only garrett Agent in Northern ireland and could have got the turbo for £500 new.

Like i say, live and learn.

:o you can get a hybrid pd150 with exchange for that price
