Featured Replies

hi all

any one got any advice on a print server for my home network?

we have got a printer thats usb only, but i am after a usb print server to plug into my router so all the machines in the house can use this printer?

any help would be advised.

i know i could just share it from one machine but it means leaving a PC on all the time

Have you thought about just getting a network printer?

I'd second this, look on ebay for refurbished laser jets and you can get a printer that cost a fortune originally fully serviced for a tiny percentage of what it cost, i have an HP Laserjet 4250DTN (Duplexer, Twin Tray, Network Card) myself, it had less than 3000 sheets on the page count and an HP high capacity toner for £75 all in.

Yup, printers are so cheap these days, just get a network one!

what Waplord and Babs said, wireless network printers are cheap as chips now.

For us it was better to get a print server as we have a mono laser and a colour inkjet and it would have been more expensive to buy new printer or a new laser colour.

I got hold of a Netgear one pretty cheap off ebay. It has 2 usb ports on and also acts as a wireless bridge so I can plug networks devices into and do so with the desktop upstairs to save having a wireless adapter in the computer.

As well as the various routers that have this service there are some NAS devices with USB ports that can have shared devices attached. Handy if you already have an adequate router but need more backup storage.
