Is going 'hybrid' worthwhile?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've recently picked up my third Fabia Vrs ( a Nice 49k SE) and it came with a Shark STS and stage 1 remap.

I've owned quite a few remapped/tuned cars in the past, but have been pleasantly surpised at the transformation of the furby with just a decent re-map.

I'm now thinking about upgrading to a hybrid turbo, but does the law of diminishing returns come into play here?

also, is an FMIC and Miltek vital for this to be a worthwhile upgrade overall?

I suppose what I'm asking is, is a hybrid turbo car dramatically quicker than just a remapped one?

thanks in advance!

im no expert but im guessing a hybrid running around 200bhp(or more) with a bigger turbo will be massively noticeable.

it would rev more freely and probably last alot longer before it runs out of "puff"

but like i said im no expert lol

+clutch and flywheel

Do it!

Dont really need exhaust heard they are good for 200. I am going hybrid and i have the back box replaced at the mo but will be going larger bore custom made turbo back rather than an off the shelf job. Depends what you have it mapped to aswell for clutch as you can keep it below 300ft/lb to run standard clutch. But again i think i will uprate this aswell with sach performance clutch but with a new oem dmf not a noisy smf.

Do you think the extra cost for the amount of gain is worth it though ?

You can get quiet SMF's now matey.

D

How much can you do yourself?

If you can cut the labour cost, then its well worth it.

A map is the biggest "bang for buck" by far, after that point (circa 170bhp) it gets expensive for not huge gains.

Remap £250 = + 40bhp

Hybrid turbo, FMIC, Clutch & new map £2500 & Labour £400 = + 50bhp (over the remap)

That is before the brakes, suspension, induction has been touched. All are rough figures, power figures are conservative but still, shows how pricey it gets the further you go. That said, I love my fabia, but I`m not going to lie, I have thought before now what I could have got for the money over the years.

big turbo > hybrid :)

Thanks for all the input so far,

I guess when i start to look at the costs, and then consider that there are clean, nicely modded Mk1 octy vrs's in the classifieds for about £1,800+ (or MK2 Golf GTI's with 20VT's fitted for £2.5k+ elsewhere) I'm struggling to justify it to myself.

I guess I could keep the SE as it is and use it as a daily, and then spend up to £3.5k on a weekend blaster! (for the same total outlay)

re how much could I do myself, have never changed a turbo but done coilovers, brakes (312 upgrade), exhausts etc in the past. Never tackled a clutch and can't say I'd fancy it really !

Evan better when u can do all the stuff on the ramp at work cut out labour :)

big turbo > hybrid :)

Still waiting on the performance times of these "big turbo's" to impress me enough to warrant the change... atm they arent as fast as even my "lowly" hybrid ;)

I've got a Hybrid and my honest answer is NO!

I reference post #833 from the "How Fast are Briskoda" day at Bedford Autodrome.

5th - 1:45.900 - PastyBoy - Cliff Clement - Fabia vRs Remaped

6th - 1:47.517 - jabbasport - Kevin Glover - Clio 182 Standard

7th - 1:47.791 - darrenvrs - Darren Smith - Fabia vRs Hybrid

8th - 1:48.126 - ickleginge - Will Newman - Fabia vRs Hybrid

Let me just say that driving skill with just a remap, show quite well that pouring money into a hybrid and the associated mods makes little if no sense.

I tip my hat to you senor PastyBoy

found big turbo is nicer to drive than a hybrid, kinda similar to the difference between hybrid and just mapped. you're not comparing like for like, you'd need to add about a tonne of ballast to yours :D

GTB2260 FTW, Go big or Go home ;)

Interesting, as a guy over on IbizaOC doesnt like his next to his old hybrid set up, feels its alot less usable on the road.

As for comparing like for like. I am. 2260 turbo on a Ibiza thats stripped, so far hasnt ran decent times (in fairness had a boost leak) but should be at Inters... if it runs into the 12's then I will agree they are the next step. Until then, a 2260 is a expensive way of going no faster.

The internet's current flavour for a reply, well done.

*stolen from said big turbo'd over on IbizaOC!*

Interesting, as a guy over on IbizaOC doesnt like his next to his old hybrid set up, feels its alot less usable on the road.

That's the age old argument about the 2260 turbo not being suited to the smaller capacity of the 1.9 engine.

I'm guessing it's a bit all or nothing power wise, and so is less flexible with it's use on the road. I did say guessing...well reasonably informed guessing. :D

I had a fabia with a stage 1 map, then as parts wore out replaced them with updated parts, I ended up with a hybrid turbo and strong map with associated upgrades making approx 200 bhp.

My honest opinion having done this is don't bother, it's not worth the outlay in cash. If you want a 200 bhp+ car then buy something that was designed that way out of the box. I currently have a mk6 golf Gti with 210 bhp and it faster in every way than my fabia was. There is much cheaper metal out there that will Leo the same jobs for much less money though

My octavia vrs 1.8t has 210bhp with a £200 map

My old hybrid fabia had 7k blown on it and popped hoses off every 2 mins!

Wow,

I'm a bit suprised by the general flavour of the responses, which I'm reading as the law of diminishing returns is very much in play here!

I think I might just invest in a FMIC, to reduce heatsoak, and leave it at that

Thanks again to everyone who has responded

just wait till your turbo goes pop like i have haha

So am I!

If you want any help in fitting an intercooler or turbo, let me know - quite happy to help you.

Thanks, I really appreciate that and may end up taking you up on the offer

I suppose there is logic in replacing the standard turbo with a hybrid/big turbo if the standard one fails.

The other thing that appeals is the 200+ bhp with 50+ MPG (when driven sensibly).

Also, I'm unlikely to spend much time on the track, but having been a honda man for years (vti, ctr, S2000 and both teg's) I now really appreciate the effortless power of a nice fat, flat torque curve in a road car

I'll throw my opinion in the mix here.

I had a mapped (162bhp, with a boost leak) Fab vRS, the turbo blew and I went down the hybrid route:

Allard VT2 Hybrid PD150

Forge FMIC

Magnex Decat

Sachs Organic Clutch

Bluflame Catback

There were other existing supporting mods, 312s etc, but I ended up with a great package put together by Shark Performance which ran a conservative and silky smooth map of 206bhp & 330lbs/ft.

I loved it. As the map was conservative (as requested, for reliability and longevity), once it was warmed up the car could be driven hard with no concerns for the turbo going pop again. Absolutely cracking car which drove superbly. The only reason I sold (to another forum member, who is now a big fan of the car) is due to the car I have now being on sale at what I consider to be a relative steal of a price, with a setup I couldn't justify paying for.

I'd say if you have a good platform car (bodywork etc) that you love, go for it. Sure, the outlay is expensive, but if you love the car and plan to keep it, why not? If you have the luxury of time, keep an eye out for mods like a turbo & FMIC at good prices and piece yourself together an upgrade kit. A few on here have done that I believe, saves a few hundred.

The difference between an admittedly poorly mapped vRS (previous owner's mod) and a properly mapped hybrid setup is incredible. Plus I managed 600+ from a tank, the record being 640.

Hope this helps a bit. Just to reiterate, if you have a decent car you'd like to keep for awhile, I'd say its worth it. Just remember of course that when it comes to selling up, modified cars are more difficult to sell.

C.
