Flaming wind noise--what now?

Featured Replies

I love my new octy, but the day after I bought it, my wife, sitting in the back seat, announced there was something wrong. It was a pretty loud wind noise, apparent above 55mph. Took car back to dealer, who said no probs, it's a design fault, we'll fix it.

Got home, having heard nothing (couldn't hear it before taking it in, unless sitting in rear) and the wife and wee lad went out for a run. My wife in the back, groaned loudly and said the noise was still there.

Took it back again, and the service manager said how unusual this was, they had had no probs fixing anyone else's! When I collected it, he admitted it hadn't been done right the 1st time, and would I sit in the back for a test drive. I did, and agreed that it seemed to be fixed.

Next day, my wife was in the back, and, you've guessed, the noise was back!

This is where it gets interesting! I could hear the noise clearly now, and so took it back at the start of the week again. Service manager said we should go out for a test drive before the car went into the workshop. Don't know if it was significant or not, but it was raining at the time. Guess what-- NO noise audible at all!! Service manager said it couldn't go back into workshop as there was nothing wrong... I felt like a right idiot.

Got home, and the next day, went out, and couldn't believe it but the noise was back, loud and clear!!!

Is a wind noise like this ( a clear hissing sound) possible to be intermittent?? I want it fixed, but if I take it back again, and it's not there when we go for the test drive, they'll all think I'm crazy..:(( I've had several mates in the back who have all commented on the noise, so I know it's not me, thank god!

Any suggestions? The dealer is 30 miles away, so it's not easy getting in there due to work commitments, but I'm getting more hacked off with it all...

This is a known problem that should now be fixed with recently produced cars. If I remember correctly it had something to do with the rear light cluster. Even the car I test drove had this problem, but the dealer pretended it was a one off. I can only suggest that you take the car to another, hopefully more helpful dealer.

If it is any consolation, my Octy 2 (2.0 TDi Ambience '04) has exactly the same problem, guess I should take it back to the dealership.

Nick

My 1 week old Octy Estate 2.0 TDi has a funny, almost electronic, high pitched buzzing noise which only seems to be heard from the passenger seat?

I love the car but this is bizarre. Could this be the same kinda of noise?.

It is bloody difficult to even work out where it is coming from, sounds like inside the cabin though.

I havent been back to the dealers yet.

the buzzing is definitely coming from the drivers door somewhere when I do around 70 upwards getting slighlty louder, very strange?

Anyone else wnat to comment? I am hoping it is a known issue, I will give the garage a call.

Octy-Kut, do you (or anyone else) have any more information about the wind noise? The car is going back to the garage tomorrow and I want to give them every chance to get it fixed first time.

Thanks,

Nick

Hello Nick,

I'm sorry I don't know the details but I actually read about it on this forum. A search should do the trick ;)

It's to do with the rear quarter window which has to be realigned apparently. Mine is there, loud and clear still, despite being "fixed" twice. Oddly, as I posted originally, the noise disappears totally if the car is driven in the rain, and can be louder depending on the direction of the wind outside.

Frankly, it ****es me off. Why should I have to have the radio on to drown it out?? When I have friends in the car they all comment on it.

Yes, my noise has returned too. Guess the car will need to go back for a second time  .

I've noticed that there is awful noise when rear window(s) are open when driving. Is this what you guys are referring to or is this just another design fault?

No, I don't think this is the same problem...when I open just one of the back windows, I get a 'beating' wind noise, which is solved if I open one of the other windows.

The wind noise that I am trying to get fixed occurs all the time over about 50mph, whether the windows are open or not.

This works on some older cars, if you think you know which rubber seal is causing the noise & it disapears when its raining try smearing some Vaseline or silicone on to the said seal & drive it in the dry, this will seal any small gaps & identify where its coming from. you can then take whatever action you see fit.

On a new car its back to the dealer & point out youve found it & they can fix it !! And not with more silicone !!!

On an older car the silicone is a good idea as long as its not on a seal you are likely to touch getting in & out of the car, silicone or grease on the good ladys clothes isnt worth the hassle.

Halfords sell silicone sprays specifically for sorting out dashboard squeaks etc & this will do the job

Hi all.

My new octy is two months old. I have this bizarre noise problem too.

It is heard no matter where you sit inside the car.

I have called skoda service in Athens/Greece and they have told me that it is a known problem. We are now expecting a silicone - glue that should fix it.

....Finally.... after 4 visits to local dealer, the wind noise has GONE! Thanks to all who posted suggestions. It was finally sorted as per one of the suggestions...;

Glad to hear it.

Good to hear; which problem was it and how was it fixed?

How did they fix it - I have the same problem!!

Apparently, the dealer admitted to me that the problem, relating to the rear quarter window, has a revised bulletin to fix it. They follwed that, and hey presto, I can now drive at speed without the damn annoying hissing that we had to put up with for two months.

Now how did you find out that there was an updated bulletin?

At last wind noise cured by replacing complete rear window seal - this seal is in one piece and fits around the rear quarterlight and the main window itself. It also covers the upright between the two pieces of glass.

Mine had a slight ripple in it where it covers the upright so wasn't sealing properly against the glass - this was proven by taping over the ripple before test driving.

Well, I don't want to keep fllogging this topic yet more.... but....

I have had my Octy II Estate for a few months. It has been back to the garage three times now to solve this wind noise problem. They have now replaced the seal around the drivers side 'rear' window, and now its even worse!!! It drives me crazy around 70/80 mph

Anyone still have this issue even after getting it "fixed"?

The car went back to the garage yesterday and so far the problem seems to be fixed. This was the second time back. After the first time, the problem was worse (noise at any speed over 40mph). I'll let you know if it comes back.

Nick

PS Have you noticed that the noise disappears if it is raining?!

It was raining earlier when I picked the car up but not heavily and the wind noise was still there?

I will keep you posted if they fix it.

It obviously is a common problem, which is why they should test the car after replacing the window seal to ensure it has been fixed.

Can you enlighten me how they fixed this at the dealers? I have precisely the same problem and want to make sure it gets sorted at its first visit to the dealer who is 70 miles away! I haven't spotted any defects or gaps in the window seals but the wind noise is defintely on the left side and too loud at speed to be comfortable for the leftside rear passeenger.

I cant post how it is fixed (not allowed by Skoda to do so for legal reasons) but if you dealer follows the latest bulletin from Skoda on the wind noise repair it will be fixed. I've had 100% sucess with the latest work and it looks like they have found the fault.
