Flaming wind noise--what now?

Featured Replies

I am taking the car back for the third time next week to try and get the fault fixed! It seems to be fixed for a while each time and then it gradually gets worse. As Lummox says, I believe there is a bulletin about the fix. However, I believe there are two bulletins, and the dealer needs to make sure that they are aware of the latest one. My dealer in Cambridge didn't seem to be aware last time I took my Octy to them.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Fixed wind noise problem myself!

Took some O-ring string 5mm dia. Placed it between the steel door frame and the outer door seal. Seal now pusches against the door seat as it is supposed to do when the door is closed.

No more noise!

PDV, have you any piccys ?

My Octy II went back to the Dealers yesterday mainly due to the battery being flat (Radio Software fix) whilst it was in I asked them to take a look at the drivers side rear door. I've been getting wind noise from it when doing 50mph and above. Spoke to them about the improved window seal for that problem and they agreed. Anyway they called me lunchtime and asked if I could test drive the car with the mechanic as they can't hear the noise, so off I trundled to the garage. When I got there they were just finishing the radio fix and I was asked to wait, so I did. Whilst waiting I saw my car being driven out of the garage and off to where ever, then 10 minutes later returning. The chap behind the desk disappeared for a while then came out (like the shopkeeper in Mr.Benn) and said they've found the noise and they will try and adjust it, but can I come back later to collect the car, I thought fine, total waste of my time but hey ....

So at 4pm I get a call from them saying they have improved the noise but they are unable to stop it, but they know of a fix, a new seal for the window ! Unfortunately they are on back order so I'll have to wait again ..........

There is a leaflet out to rectify the wind noise of the rear quater windows. Remove the door panel undo the screw that fixes the bar that separates the two panes of glass, pull the bar towards the back of the vehicle which tightens the quarter glass. this works but then somestimes the main window goes a bit loose so judge it yourself.

From what is said above those who have this problem can easily check the source by putting a masking tape over the glass seals that seem to be suspect.

Put the tape on in such a way that you can peel a strip off at a time until the wind noise comes back. Re tape that last section removed and if the noise goes away again you have isolated the source and can them go to your dealer a tell them exactly what to replace.

Wind noises, water leaks, squeaks and rattles are always difficult to cure and it is just a process of trial and error.

The best one I had was when we had to find a rumble, rumble, clonk noise on a Chrysler 300 and after much driving around with some poor bugger hanging out of the vehicles windows we tracked the noise down to an empty Coke bottle left inside one of the front fenders.

Thanks for the advice, that was going to be my next move, can't see why they just can't use sealer on the quarter light window to seal it

Okay, I've read through the thread.

I've got the same problem on my octaviaII 1.9TDI. The problem is, that I haven't read any solid solutions?

I'll take the car in for its 30 000km maintenance next week, what should I tell my dealer?

The dealer is not a big skoda dealership, it's much bigger in vw/audi... (yes, I'm that guy who really wanted the skoda in stead of the Golf V ;) ). So I don't think that they will be aware of the problem with the flaming wind noise.

Where should I tell them to start looking? Is there a sort of general FAQ for dealers available or something like that to which I can refer for a solution if they dont know this sort of problem? (My dealer is in Belgium by the way)

I've taped the small little windows on my back doors, and also the black thingy in between of the windows on both sides. I'll see what that does already tomorrow morning...

My Octy went in today to my local dealer to have the window seal changed on the O/S/R door due to wind noise. Picked the car up lunchtime and hey presto the noise is still there ! Drove straight back to the dealer and told them, the guy at the service desk said they have now tried both solutions given to them by Skoda UK and he filled in a form regarding further assistance from them. I suggested replacing the whole door might help ! we both laughed, he said he'll contact me when he heres from Skoda UK.

I've just bought a second Octavia Mark II and it has the same bloomin' noise as my first did. I have already had it back to the same dealers as the first one had to be returned to 4 times, and it is going back tomorrow again as they failed to fix it 1st time. This one's whistling is even worse than my first's, and the dealers are questioning whether the noise is there at all. Not pleased with this at all, as it's impossible to sit in the back at speeds over 50mph. Will update.

what skoda told my garage was to remove the rear door panel, remove the bottom screw on the runner between the quarter window and the glass push it to the rear to tighten the quarter window then put the screw and door panel back.

The simplest and most effective way to resolve this issue is to visit a bodyshop and have them apply silicon on the interior side of the quarter panel window at the point where the rubber seal overlaps on the door frame.Obviously, the seal should be lifted a little so as to allow that gunlike dispener they use to deliver the silicon paste onto the above mentioned area. This is what I had them do to my car and the problem has ceased to exist.Trust me on this one guys and you will not regret it.

I have the same problem with my new Roomster Scout 1.9tdi... will take it to the dealer soon.

Hi,

My Octy has been into the dealer to have wind noise (seems like the driver door) looked at.

They have adjusted the rear door but the wind noise is still there.

Taking it back next week for this to be looked at again.

You would have thought by now they would have this sorted.

Regards

My second Octy goes back tomorrow for its 3rd visit to try to sort this out. 7 visits in total for two cars has become a complete joke. If they don't sort it properly, I intend just to return straight back, leave it and say call me when it's sorted.
