BMW X-Drive System

Featured Replies

This looks like it's similar to the haldex system (Well the newer versions), but does anyone know if it sends most of the drive to the rear, or if it's mainly to the front etc?

Ta

AFAIK the BMW system sends most of the power to the rear wheels as per the MO of BMW. What that split is I don't recall.

I saw the old X drive system was about 32:58 front:rear, but can't find anything out about their new system.

The x-drive is interesting as a comparison to the audi cars or any of the 4 motion type vehicles.

Apart from the scout, there is little in the way of 4x4 dervs in teh VAG range until you pay Audi prices. :(

The Xdrive X1 I had for a month about a year ago was thirsty. It was a 1.8D as well.

118d you mean?

that'd a 2.0 140-160 bhp one if so.

When you say thirst, how bad was it?

Nope it was 1.8D engine size as per TFL when I did the congestion charge. Not sure the model number.

Best I managed was 34mpg as extra urban. And that was after seeing the mpg gauge dropping and driving within the 'good' zone (looked like a fuel gauge between revs and speedo)

No idea what that is then, because as far as I knew it was a 1.4 in the mini and a 2.0 everywhere else until you got to the 6 pots.

Hey ho.

Nope they definitely do a 1.8d too.

The little economy guage has been around since BMW's of the 80's/90's I think. It used to be driven off the vacuum of the engine and represented how the engine was doing economy wise at that moment in time.

Nowadays I suspect it is driven by the computer. Don't know if exists on the newer ones.

the 116/118D beemer is a detuned 2.0 lump

the 116/118D beemer is a detuned 2.0 lump

All diesels available on the 1 series were 2 litres; the 116d, 118d, 120d and 123d, just in different states of tune (all M47 or N47 engines). Same applies to the latest shape 1 series, with the sole exception of 116d ED which is a 1.6 diesel, from the MkII Mini I think.

The Xdrive X1 I had for a month about a year ago was thirsty.... 1.8D engine size as per TFL... Best I managed was 34mpg as extra urban

My old man had a 120d facelift for 3 years (same engine but more power, circa 177 bhp) and it never returned less than 50 mpg from a tank, if you drove it at 70 on the motorway it would deliver 56 mpg and up.

The X1 is in the same boat as the 1 series regarding diesel engines, they're all 2.0 litres too. But economy obviously won't be as good, the X1 is heavier, has xDrive and is less aerodynamic. Was the X1 you had equipped with stop/start and was it a manual box?

Certainly does, brand new 12 plate F30 320d Sport has it. It still looks vacuum driven to me, but it probably isn't.

Manual with stop start. It shifted, but at a cost.

Luckily not my fuel bill.

You obviously had a faulty one, as I couldn't get a 123d or a 330d to go that low on the times I took them for a test drive.

Do you not have the 4motion passat/golfs over there? Don't forget the 4x4 superb and non scout 4x4 octavias of old.

I'd have to agree, must have been something wrong with it. I can't imagine you get any BMW 4 cylinder diesel to dip below 40 mpg under any on-the-road circumstances, and even the older ones will do over 50 mpg on the extra urban.

Yes we do, but they're not diesels. All the 4motion stuff tends to be high performance petrol (think Golf R, Passat R36). Superb 4x4 is the exception, it has the 2.0 CR TDI. If we consider 4x4 in the context of modestly increased ground clearance too, there isn't much else apart from the Scout and perhaps the Tiguan from VAG.

Yeti?

:)

Yeti would certainly count for the increased ground clearance group and there are a few golf 4motion and Audi A3 2 litre TDI Quattros (using Haldex in fact) around here, The R32's, R34's etc are (unfortunatley) the ones I dont see often! :(

Passat Alltrack? Saw one last night - not particularly high ride - certainly didn't look as high as the Octavia Scouts I've seen.

:)

Vomit and that goes for all 4x4 vehicles apart from an old school landy used for what it is meant to be used for.

Sorry, the only X-Drive car I'd consider would be the 1 and only if it's more rear than front wheel drive.

Otherwise I'd not bother with the x-drives at all.

On the other side, I'd forgotten the superb comes in 4x4 2.0 TDI CR.

Hmm

Excellent :)

That's an option then :)

my 123D did about 43mpg as an average, hardly any more than my 3.0 Quattro Audi! Still, it was a great engine :)

Ahh but would you get a 325d (6pot engine) though amanda?

I should be getting a 350Cdi in a couple of weeks :) Would have loved a 330D 8 speed, but the PCP was just silly :(

I'm tempted to lease a C series, but there is a second hand 325d, that has enough of a price difference over a 330d, that you could run it for a couple of years with the difference.

My only thoughts are around how useless the RWD would be in the snow, as we saw a good dump of it last year.

460lb/ft + RWD+ Snow....what could possibly go wrong?
