Thinking of Re-map on 110 TDI - anyone had it done?

Featured Replies

I am thinking of having a re-map on my 110 TDI Elegance. Has anyone had it done and if so, what was the benefits? Did it make a big difference to performance and economy?

I am only 15 miles away from Mansfield where Shark Performance is based and I have heard a lot of good things about them, so was considering taking it to them.

Any comments would be gratefully received!

Thanks

Dan

shark have a good rep, and are prepared to sort thing out too if it doesn't go to plan (which inevitably happens to some people)

I had the same 110 engine remapped, but it wasn't in an Octavia, it was in an old shape Audi A4.

Remap took it to around 140hp IIRC ....... a great improvement, it didn't have the torque or flexibiltiy of the PD130 engine but it was much more freer revving than the 'stock' 110 engine, and pulled right through the rev range, with no discernible flat spots.

I wouldn't say it was a 'game changer' on that engine, but worth doing, and a more flexible, enjoyable drive.

I'm running a Shark Map on my Roomster PD105. It's great.

That is all.

Different engine really.

As above it is worth it but probably not as instantly noticeable as on a PD engine as you won't get such an increase in torque or the bit lump/oomph of torque you get on the PD.

I had my a3 tdi 110 remapped (revo) and it made 138 bhp. I would disagree with above it made mine drive very similar to a standard pd130 engine but more torque and generally more aggressive. Completely different car before and after, but on the down side it killed my ageing turbo

sounds like you had a very aggressive map............. by it's mechanical design (lack of PD etc) the 110 engine isn't suited to PD levels of torque, as you perhaps found out with it killing your turbo.

No remap should 'kill a turbo' if it is set within sensible parameters for the engine.

The one I got, (which as I said still made 140hp) was more progressive but still a lovely drive and I owned the car for 2 years post-remap and never had a lick of bother.

to be fair, my car had 170000 miles on it and was on the original turbo. turbo was most likely at or near the end of its life anyway, but the extra boost 'helped' it on its way. the revo map is aggressive and 1st gear was awkward. if i did it again on that engine i would definitely go for a more progressive map

If you think about it your asking a turbo thats maybe pushed 15psi its whole life then all of a sudden your asking it to push 20psi, same goes for the clutch and flywheel so chances of wear and failure are vastly increased! No matter how 'good' the map

A lot of companys get a bad rep if an owner has a component failure but you have to remain sensible at the same time, your asking a part to cope with more power than it was even designed as new to do so, it a real lottery

Thanks guys for the comments!

I do like the torque and oomph that the PD engine gives - we also own a Bora 100PD which pulls like a train which makes the 110 TDI feel very sluggish in comparison, despite having a recon turbo and all the other usual suspects that cause these engines to knock off the power....

I am in Mansfield tomorrow so may call into Shark for a chat, however I am wondering whether to consider buying a 130PD Octavia instead as you also get the 6 speed box as well!

Now that sounds like a plan! ......... if you like the muscle of the 100hp PD engine, wait til you see how the PD 130 goes! ........ IMHO its the best engine VAG have ever made

(and I've got a bloody 1.8T petrol VRS!)

Your only down the road from shark like me :)...Pop in and get it done. Have a blast around mansfield lol.

Sorry to hijack the post but I have a 2004/70kmiles 130PD Ocy Estate and have been offered Superchip for this vehicle from an authorised agent for £399.00 inc vat

for +31bhp & +41 ft/lbs torque. I know 'others' have gone more but I am after a reasonably lower risk upgrade - my question is, will the I really feel like I am getting a 'good bang for the buck' for this upgrade? Any thoughts appreciated.

too expensive, you can get it mapped for much less

If you want power, put in a front mounted intercooler, clean out the inlet manifold, egr and intercooler and have the EGR blocked off.

Fit injectors from a larger TDI (Say the 2.5 TDI you found in a transporter).

Then remap it and you'll be very pleased :)

So who and where for lowest risk and bang per buck?

Somewhere between Reading and London would be good for me.

Sounds a bit too involved for me - I was hoping for a reasonably simple 'plug n play' or 20 mins programming and run-up on the rollers/road test to finess (also sounds pricey) - does that sound tight? Guess so.

I'm confused. Isn't the 110TDI a PD engine? If not, what is it? :S

It's not a PD. Just a normal TDI with normal fuel pump/injectors.

Still ECU controlled etc etc but doesn't have the oomph of the PD's.

Rock solid engine though really.

Perhaps you're confused about the fact that there is a PD100 and the newer PD105.

In that case, the best thing you can do, before any remap is pay a garage to clean out your intercooler, the pipework and inlet manifold and blank off the EGR. If you don't mind paying a little more, they can strip and clean the turbo too, which is a good thing on these enfgines

It's s simple, but dirty job.

Once done, then the car will perform much more solidly.

Then after that, if you want even more, you can look at a remap.

The TDI110, did soot up a bit, but blanking off the EGR can be done with a gasket only, with no worry of engine lights.

Once that's blanked off and the pipework cleaned, you'll flow the air like the original engine and it will go a lot better.

That plus regular new air filters. IIRC after 40k, mine used to look like a block of coal, so I moved to 10k changes.

FWIW, the TDI110 is one of the most thermally efficient engines made by VAG and is very very tuneable.
