Oil Choice vRS TDI

Featured Replies

Morning guys,

I've been offered a choice of oils for my Fabia for an oil and filter change from a VAG specialist in Carlisle.

1 - Quantum 5w40 (£79) inc labour

2 - Quantum longlife 3 5w30 (£85) in labour

I thought the latter was for variable service intervals up to 20k?

Any advice on which one would be the better option and why? Cars coming up to 136k miles.

Thanks :)

First one because it's cheaper.

I think it depends on the service schedule. If you are on fixed distance then the cheaper option. If it's the variable, then you need the longlife option.

Variable service option isn't available on the MkI vRS, is it?

No it isn't. You can use 507 spec oil (which is spec'd for variable service intervals) but you won't be on variable service as the fabia lacks the sensors to be able to measure the variables required to determine service life based on use. It won't do any harm but you won't see any noticeable benefits eg longer intervals.

Apart from the variable intervals, which the vRS can't follow anyway there isn't any other benefits using the 5w30 long life 3 oil over the regular 5w40? I thought the higher viscosity would be better in a high mileage engine anyway.

Thanks guys.

Booked the car in Friday morning for the oil change, for only £6 more I've chosen the Quantum longlife 3 oil which exceeds the current requirements of 505.01 spec. Done a Google search and quite a few folk running their PD's on this oil regardless of the service regime.

I thought the Vrs was meant to run on 5w40, not 5w30?

Well I was assured that the 5w30 longlife 3 oil was more than suitable for the TDI vRS, he said it keeps the engine internals clean with minimal mechanical wear and also it doesn't degenerate like other oils of a lower spec and protects the all important PD camshaft and lobes etc. Well I hope he was right!! Got me worried now....

I did a few oil grade searches on the net using my car reg and they came up with 5w30 oil for the vRS TDI meeting 505.01 or higher.

As long as it meets the spec it'll be fine.

Hmm.. The manual says 5w40, so that's what I'll use. Only that. Ever. Engines are expensive, I'm not gonna run the risk.

The really useful guide on this here site kind of reinforces this - note that ALL are 5w40:

Edit: Except the few on page two :giggle:

I may have misunderstood but reading the opening line I think all of the oils listed in the updated second thread are 5w30? Meeting the VW 504 00 to 507 00 level spec and exceeding the previous ones listed.

Got to do an oil change on mine at the weekend. How many litres does a vRS need?

I'm sure it's 4.3 litres of oil the vRS drinks.... Which oil will you be using? :)

I am not sure yet. going through the list of oils on here. Will do the change myself and already have the filter. I will be using 5w-30 as thats whats in it at the minute but as for brand I am not sure.

Found some cheap Castrol EDGE on ebay so maybe I will go for that.

Seems to be some confusion and conflict as to which oil is best etc lol..... If your sticking with the 5w30 then you might as well choose a VW 507 00 spec'd oil which the Castrol EDGE is. Also I'm having an oil change on Friday (not doing it myself) and having Quantum 5w30 longlife 3 oil added, you can pick 5 litres up on Ebay for around £30.

Save yourself £25.00 do it yourself, if just an oil change & filter. LOL

Far better off doing it yourself, then you know excatally what has been done as well as saving cash. Great idea of being able to change the filter up top too.

Been having a good look through my service book and I noticed quite a few of the services have used longlife 3 oil for QG1 service intervals. All 12 stamps are the Skoda dealer which supplied the vehicle to the first owner with mileages varying from 4k to 15k between oil change services, the box which says 'next inspection service' km/miles has variable written down on quite a few pages and 'on dash' as the next service date due.

I'm confused now, the vRS isn't able to follow the variable service regime so why would they do this? At least I know the engines been running on longlife 3 oil which I'm having refreshed on Friday.

Just go to your local skoda dealer. 5 litres. £30 and you know it's the right oil.
