Stay with Mk1 Vrs or move on to the MK2 Vrs?

Featured Replies

I have a 2001 octy vrs at the moment, its remapped and i love it to bits, but i have been thinking for a while, do i upgrade to the mk2 Vrs, the petrol turbo, 200bhp standard.

i just want thoughts on wether it is any quicker, more fun etc etc.

anybody upgraded and regretted it???

Cheers

a mk1 is a proper drivers car a mk2 makes driving fast easy ;-) both good in there own way but fun factor is down to your driving style

I had a 51 plate Octavia Vrs and now I have a FL Octavia petrol Vrs. The cars are very different the Mk 1 is a really good car but the MK II is more refined. I think you can have more fun in the Mk1 as it really looks the part. My Vrs has the D S G box in it Have you driven the MK II, try one see what you think

Octavia 1- lighter, more reactive, slightly flimsy in comparison, engine not the most efficient.

Octavia 2- more 'mature', very hefty build quality, slightly dull-witted in comparison but still quick and competent.

Personal choice- Octy 1. I like my cars with a bit more lightness and am happy to sacrifice a newer car for an older, more engaging drive.

If you find yourself getting bored of the 1, then add a new performance-based part. It's much cheaper and less hassle than buying a new car, and should reignite your passion.

I had a mk1 octy vrs for 2 years then i got a mk2 octy vrs & i dont regret the change at all,the mk1 is a good car but in my opinion the mk2 is much better, mine were/are both standard,id say try a mk2 & see what you think, the one & only thing i dont like about my mk2 is the brakes,my mk1 had much better brakes, both are good cars,The TFSI engine is a peach in the mk 2,loads of low down torque & pulls all the way to the red line, the ride can be a bit jiggly at low speeds on rough roads,i shall be keeping my mk 2 for a while yet, with my mk1 i always felt it wasnt the car i expected it to be,no problems like that with the mk2.

I changed from the MK1 to MK2 last year and my thoughts are...The MK2 is faster, looks better, handles better and even sounds better! The only down side is the MK1 is has a better build quality as the MK2 has too many 'common faults' I still wouldnt switch back tho 'out with the old and in with the new'

Mmmm, Posts #3 and #4 believe the Mk II to have better build quality (which I agree with as my bro has one), and post #6 believes the Mk I had better build quality. Most posts believe the Mk 1 had a more sporty ride/drive (which I agree with but to be fair my bro has a non-VRS Mk II), but posts #5 and #6 (who both changed to Mk IIs ;)) believe the Mk II has better handling ......

So, when these questions are asked I think people just 'self-justify' in the main.... if you had a Mk I and spent £14k upgrading to a Mk II you're probably going to believe you done the right thing, and if you're still on a Mk 1 (for whatever reason, in my case financial!), you're probably going to believe you're still on the better car. :)

I guess like most cars, where you're looking at 10+ years difference, you tend to see things 'softened' a bit in later cars (look at how the Golf GTI has 'evolved' from a hot hatch to a run of the mill Golf), but you're also more likely to see better build quality, more refinement and perhaps better fuel efficiency.

If I had the money, I am sure I'd be on a Mk II VRS (but probably a CR 170 rather than 2.0TFSI to be honest), but I feel no hardship with my Mk 1 as it is a fantastic rewarding car with superb performance (now I have a good remap on!), and even though it's 10 years old, there's not a rattle and it's pretty much faultless inside and out. Happy days!

Ok here goes I'm on my fourth octy VRS. Had a brand new one in 2001 then another in 2002 then another in 2006 mk 2 again new and now back to a 2002. Which is best ? I'd say the mk 1 and it's this simple 180bhp + 149mph = £2500

To me Mk1 VRS is more sporty looking , looks more aggresive and seem to have a more purposeful feel about compared to the Mk2 VRS which I have also driven.

I like to think technology take steps in a forward direction, but not always. Mk 2 seems to be a smooth built car , better build quality(well in the one i drive) although nothing wrong with Mk1 build quaility.

Mk 2 looks a bigger heavy car. So opinion is not easy on preference as others said when you make a change to a newer model you typically change your opinion on older model.

Only downside on Mk 1 I think the 180 bhp is too low and it should of been made witha K04 turbo. Now a Mk1 with a Mk 2 engine could be good.

I don't like the look of the Mk2. I'm looking at replacing my MK1 not because there is anything wrong with it, I just fancy a change. Think I'll be getting a new shape Seat Leon Cupra.

If I used my head I'd keep the MK1, it's a great car.

I taxi'ed my MK1 and taxi my MK2 TFSI and I stand by my comment that the MK1 is of better build quality due to too many 'common faults' on the MK2, you only have to look on here...the MK1 section has over 22000 topics and the MK2 has over 23000 topics even tho the MK1 has been around 6 years more! And most people post here to try get a DIY fix to a fault.

You can't argue with the numbers I guess.. wow, I am surprised the Mk II forum has more topics than the Mk I forum. Although it is a generalism to believe they're all because of problems. But I do generally see your point.

I was also in this predicament, went for a test drive in a MK2 vRS and i quite enjoyed it, was fairly quick but for me felt really "refined". My mk1 feels refined as it is and i couldn't really justify spending 6k+ for a very similar car.

I personally think the mk2 is a fat lump and as for it being quicker... well I have never had one leave me behind.

If I was to move to a mk2 it would have the face lift model. but if I was to move from the Octy it would have to be for something more like a vxr8 or an RS4 because personally I don't think you will get much better for the money, practicality and fun.
