Satin Black Head lights How too!

Featured Replies

i copied this out my build thread as not everyone would read it.. so i put in here for everyone.

Still waiting for the intercooler pipes to come! :wall: and im bored shartless! So i decided to mutilate my head lights. its something i wanted to do since i got the car as im not a fan of chrome. Im planning on doing my LEDs this week (taxi G) also as i have the rest of the week off! woop!

So for now, heres a mini how to for "satin Black headlights"

Tools needed..

Some bottle <<< this is the most important one.

Standly knife

Heat gun

Patience

Paint and plastic prima

1500 grit Sand pater

mini torx bits

Flat blade screw drivers.

This is how i done it, it may be right, it may be wrong. It worked for me, it mite not for you. It aint my fault if you try and it goes Tits up hmmmkayy! :sun:

remove Both head lights from car, There is 4 torx screws holding it in. 2 on the inner edge of the head light (next to the grill) 1 on top, and 1 behind the indicator.

Once removed, Clean them up best you can, this saves mess later.

Remove both rear covers on back of the cluster, remove any bulbs Hid ballast etc.

I found removing all attachments worked well the second time round. The first light i did i left them all attached and broke 1 of the clips on the back of the light for the Electronic adjusters. Luckly this glued back on! There are 2 small torx to remove from the adjuster and it just wiggles out.

2 more for the top adjusters, just unscrew and it saves knocking your adjustments out.

1 just just above the projector

the other in the opposite corner.

now thats all free you need to heat up the plastic without melting it, but hot enough to make the glue all soft. i warn you now.... 1 head light was a pig, the other was easier. so what you have is all on luck!

Heat on the white part of the head light, just behind the clear plastic..

IMAG2110.jpg

follow it around the cluster.

IMAG2111.jpg

the glass (ill call it that as its simpler to decipher than plastic) is sandwiched in so you need to put alot of heat to the rear of the cluster. When its hot to the touch and trust, IT WILL BE HOT!! get your blade and start carfully scoring in the gap between the plastic and the glass.

IMAG2045.jpg

the more you heat it up yo will find your blade will eventually get down about 10mm between the plastic and the glass. Now unfortunatly even tho the outer seal has been broken, where it is sandwiched, its stuck like a godden on the inside.

This is where your bottle comes into it. You will need to use a medium sized flat blade to get between the plastic and glass. At the bottom of the head light (still with alot of heat) you will be able to pull the glass away enough to get your screw driver in there and brake the inner seal. remember keep it hot and you will be able to pull the glass away buy hand, i warn you now, its a PITA!!

once split it should look a little like this..

at this point you will prob want a breather... Once you have looked at your head light and though. oh my good fking god what am i doing.. Grab your 1500 grit and key up what ever bits you want to spray. I wanted to go as dark as i can, i masked off the reflective bit needed for the head light, and sprayed up all this lot!

You can see, i did my indicator as well. I have Converted them to side lights but ill show that in a sec.

When your waiting for t all to dry you will need to clean up your glass and plastic as there will be loads of sealant on them still. This is messy!

i used a flat blade screw driver and scraped it all out quite easy, as it fit in the plastics "gully" quite well..

IMAG2080.jpg

When all dry, Reverse all that ^^^ and i have orderd Tiger seal to glue it all back together. i aint got it yet so cant show u it being sealed. I have a few more bits inside my lights so keep ya eyes peeled in the next couple of days!

heres how mine looked after doing 1..

Looking good so far.Think the MK2 would be a pig to do.

So much approval! Like that a lot. Can't wait to see them fitted!

Cheers bud. ill fit them today for a pics sake, just waiting fir some Green pin stripe before i seal them back up. :)

Didn't want to like this idea when i saw the title..... but they do look good...!

Interesting to see how it affects light output if at all??

  • Author

thanks.. light output should remain the same as i have not sprayed the reflector part of the light. Going to go fit them shortly.

I'm not a big fan of this mod.

i love it.. looks mean

Must admit its a mod that is not for me, but to be fair it does compliment the front end and agree it does give it a mean look.

Just noticed splitter to road clearance, how big is that clearance, it looks only about 25mm, how do you get over road humps ???.

Its nice to see different cars on here, well done.

  • Author

yeh clearance is not much as all.. I only really scrape going in and out of multi stories and i rarely visit them. The mountain mammoth bumps around blue water i cannot get over, but i dont really get many issues on the road. the square ones i got to dog leg over and the wide ones i do at an angle. (if need be)

i have always had slammed cars so its the norm for me! lol

Gee man, you need to come visit bonnie Scotland, bring all your gear with you & sort my car out to look as good as this, absolute beast!

G

Your car looks like it wants to eat children...

This looks awesome!!!! Very cool car!

Looks good in daylight - i'd like to see what the effect is with the lights on. I'll reserve judgement till then :)

  • Author

will look no different as i have not sprayed any of the reflective part needed for the lights to work :)

Yeah but considering the whole inner is reflective chrome it'll surely have an effect on how it looks with the lights on won't it? Not saying that it'll be any kind of MOT issue or anything but it'll obviously change how it looks with the lights on I would have thought.

  • Author

na mate, its there purely to look nice. the only bits needed for the lights function is the bumpy shiny bit. (this is why you get light scatter) the rest of the chrome is there (1) to be reflective when parked at night so it can be seen more (2) to look "nice" if you lot at the "sporty" models of some new cars you will see there head lights are dark as it looks more agressive etc etc. If i get time to wire it all up today ill take some pics. Im 100% sure the light output will be the same as before as with past cars i have done this too.

looks ace on your car mate! a good mod. Done it with a few of my cars now

Awesome!!!! I wonder how they d look on a black car...
