Electrical Weirdness?

Featured Replies

My 04 VRS has racked up some little problems recently:

1st, aircon suddenly stopped blowing cold while I was driving. AC light will still come on but doesn't cool.

2nd, one headlight bulb wouldn't light and the warning light came on. Fitted a new bulb, but that one didn't work either. The removed one looked fine. Checked all fuses, ok. I pulled the bulb out again, pulled at any wires I could see in the engine bay (inc. battery earth), re-fitted bulb and then it worked. Sprayed any electrics visible in the engine bay with GT86. Been ok since. One odd thing was that the clock and mile counter reset back to 12:00 and 0 just before the headlight worked again.

3rd, power steering light came on but the steering felt fine. 5 mins of driving I switch car off and back on again, twice. Light went out and never returned.

4th, one front speaker buzzes on bass frequencies, I assume its "blown", but what exactly has happened to it? What part of a speaker fails when it would be classed as "blown"? I may just get an OEM replacement fitted rather than go down the full replacement route.

Any advice on these?

Thanks

My guess is the main earth from the battery or one of the earth points below/behind the battery.

My guess is the main earth from the battery or one of the earth points below/behind the battery.

Seems likely for 2) but not or the others.

The air con is either broken or just out of gas

Not sure what has caused the power steering light incident

The speaker is just blown, could it have been caused by removing a aux device while it was switched on, i.e. from a loud "pop"?

1) A loose earth to the fan controller will stop the N25 or N280 from operating, so no a/c. OP said it stopped blowing cold whilst driving.

3) A bad earth will certainly upset the J500 PAS controller.

Garage found a loose wire underneath, something to do with the alternator, all fixed now.

Although they confirmed that my aircon compressor is broke, cue another huge bill...........

Before you give up on the compressor...

When you turn on the a/c, does the radiator fan come on?

If you look inside the a/c pulley, is the centre nut turning when the a/c is on?
