Used Scout - would high mileage put you off?

Featured Replies

Have spotted a used 2.0 diesel Scout for sale, 2009 reg. with 127,000 miles on the clock.

Should I be concerned about the high mileage? Is there anything I should ask or look out for?

Thanks

Not necessarily, if the maintenance has been kept up and the car is in good condition otherwise, it should be just fine.

Aside from the 4x4 drivetrain the Scout is all but identical to a normal Octavia estate so assuming it has full history and hasn't been driven like it's been stolen it will be good for another 100K.

Get under the car and check for leaks around the Haldex and rear diff as the seals are known to fail over time.

Check also that the Haldex oil has been replaced every 40,000 miles, a Scout with that mileage should have had it changed three times but I'm guessing it won't have!

Whilst you are under there check for any evidence of off-road action as the Scout is favoured by farmers and vets. If it has a towbar try to find out what its been towing and how often as dragging a caravan around won't do the longevity of the clutch, DMF or gearbox any favours.

If it is an approved used purchase from a Skoda dealer check the alloy wheels for delamination too and ask for them to be replaced as they are a known weak point.

On anotehr thread it's noted that the scout has a DPF.

If it does, then I'd be asking for £1000 off to replace it, if it has not been replaced with a new one in the last 30-40k miles.

I seem to remember hearing a DPF is expected to be good for 100k miles.

Yes the Scout has a DPF (the engine is an 8V version of the 2.0 TDi).

If the DPF has had a hard life (lots of short trips) then it might be ready for replacement but a 2009 car with 130,000 miles on it suggests motorway mileage.

There are lots of high mileage DPF equipped VAG engines out there with 250,000+ miles on the original DPF.

If the last owner was a vet run. It'll have done those 127k up and down farm tracks with a boot filled with wet dogs and dead cows.
