Nexus 7 Tablet

Featured Replies

i have a 10" tablet and just bought my old man a 7" aurora II. i got to say the 7" is much more portable and everything looks crisp, better than i thought and certainly not cramped at all. im thinking of selling mine to buy one now as, for me, its just a better size even though i first thought it would be too small.

the nexus certainly reads like its going to be great but i dont like the fact theres no microsd slot, if you watch films on it then this WILL be an issue. yes you could use a cable to a small usb stick but when your mobile i feel this detracts from what these tablets are all about, portability. i recently had to use the cable with mine as the card died and it was a right pain so i know first hand that i wouldnt like it and thats why i didnt buy it, instead going for the one i did

  • I'm on a SIM only plan, and have *hopefully* sorted out an unlocked sensation XE for a good price on eBay so I can switch networks whenever. Decent phones only seem to be on £40 24 month contracts.

  • Be aware that if you go for 8GB almost 4GB of that is already taken so in real terms you have only 4GB free and NO micro SD expansion slot.

Had a play with one today and toying with getting one after some good deals on hot UK deals lately.

But is it any good for doing word processing and excell stuff? My sensation often struggles with some files. Any good apps for the Nexus 7?

Sorry but have used Tapatalk and find it crap. I just don't see the appeal or what it does that the web version doesn't

Love my Nexus 7 but haven't tried it with Word or Excel type stuff yet. I imagine it would be usable with the right app but imagine screen space would be pretty limited when using the screen keyboard.

Have to agree with this. Tapatalk probably fine on a phone but I much prefer to use "normal" web versions on the Nexus 7

I like the Nexus.

Runs apps smoothly and without any real issue. I bought it to use as a media player and for some games when on the train to/from work or on hockey road trips and it hasn't disappointed. The 32gig storage is a major benefit. Screen is decent enough without being super sharp but even for non-Google Play movie content, it's decent enough. Just stick the VLC player on it and it'll handle most things (although it wasn't overly keen keeping subtitles in sync on a film I was watching). Waiting on the Android release of Baldurs Gate to really try it for sustained play but it was great for Final Fantasy 3.

Sideloading Flash is also straight forward. Some streaming media is still reliant on it and even though it's not available via Google Play, the Nexus handles flash just fine (with an additional browser like Firefox).

Can you explain what this means and how to do it please!!

Waiting for cpw to get stock again :(

£239 for a 3g version (no stock of course) seems good value and this could have appealed to me...

I called into PCWorld last week and had a blast - my iPad 1 has been around for a while and is too "big" for my needs (as it's almost the same size as my MBP!)... i found the Nexus, a boring, slow, poorly constructed tablet, with good storage and an Ok screen - it even stuttered badly between app-pages. So, think I'll continue using my MacBookPro out for a while!

2 questions after a week with mine (32gb).

Where can I get flash to side load?

Does anyone else have poor battery life? Eaten 20% of battery in 2 hours browsing and posting here. Is that normal?

Doesn't sound right, I can usually manage a couple of days between charges. Have you changed wi fi to drop when tab is in stand by? That's my basic tweak I always do.

Yup. Wifi dies when sleeping.

When you say a few days, how long on the net in hours?

SWMBO has one. It's currently been on battery 1 day 5.5 hours and showing 43%. It's had almost 6 hours of screen use.

Hers is rooted too.

Running 4.2.1? Only 1 user, or 2nd profile?

Android is notoriously bad at closing background apps: end result is that it is running them in the background slowing the foreground app down and draining battery. There are various ways to fix it, just google "kill android app". That could be one cause.

Heres another one which most people will find blindingly obvious but I have met a total of 4 people who seriously did not know this so its always worth a mention. Screen brightness. Brighter screen means more energy required. Turn it down to save some power. Alternately I run my devices with auto settings on if one exists, wont save as much power but in areas where you simply dont need full brightness it turns it down for you nicely.

Bluetooth, android tends to be pretty good at putting bluetooth to sleep when not in use.

Flash if you cant find it on the play store you might be able to hunt down as a .apk file. Search "flash apk", transfer it to the nexus somehow (USB, dropbox, email, bluetooth, download on the tablet itself, who cares) and use a file browser app to find it on your storage, tap it to run it and it will install. You may have to go into the security settings screen and enable "installation of applications from 3rd party sources" or something like that. Warning though, flash may be free software but technically downloading it from a source other than the play store or adobes website (try going to it on the nexus in browser and hunting a download link) is still technically piracy. I don't know if you care too much about software piracy or not but just so you know.

Android allowing the manual installation of .apk files is pretty god damned handy. My brother got a kindle fire for christmas. Lovely piece of hardware for the price but sadly amazon have replaced the UI with a real sucky one, stuck ads on the lock screen and there is no play store or any of the other default google apps like maps and youtube. Quick root later (ok took an hour once I downloaded and installed the tools and watched endless videos on the process to 100% familiarise myself with what I am doing all while dealing with a player dispute on the minecraft server I admin on). Gets us the file system privelages needed to manually install the play store, google services and a replacement homescreen. Now it looks much like any other android tablet.

From ics you don't need a task killer nearly everything not actively needing background running is closed.

Everything else above is already done. It's my 5th android device ;)

They say that but every ICS handset I have used has proven to be just as bad as the old 2.x versions of android. Brothers kindle, sisters galaxy s2, mates s3, mates nexus 10, mates galaxy note. All need tasks killed manually.

Been using a Galaxy Note on ICS since ICS was launched for it, never had to kill an application. I wonder if it is an application error / poorly written application that causes issues rather than the OS. Even swapping between multiple open applications all day seems not to worry the battery. They only use power (it seems) when the application is actively doing something.

Chris

Thinking about it, never used an app killer on any version of Android and never had problems. I have used 1.6 / 2.2 / 2.3 and 4.04.

I find even the stock apps fail at closing.

Infact these are the only 4 apps that seem to close correctly on my old 2.2 phone: opera mini, angry birds, ES file explorer and Gameboid. Every other app stays open, including angry birds seasons (which didnt run too well on the handset anyway). App killers came in so handy.

The general rule is if it background syncs or uses data it generally won't. I but most apps on ICS and above should. Jellybean goes further with closing apps down but apps like play and maps always run unless you manually restrict them. If you do then they should stop. It's not immediate but after a few minutes of inactivity. Waking the device may make apps appear in active processes, but they should stop again.

You have to remember that the kindle is customised by Amazon. I'm not sure what version they're running or how much if the features are left in the os if ICS.

Be wary of some free games on the Android Market. Some will always stay on then pop up with notifications trying to sell you other apps. I'd stay well away from those. These also drain power too

Just checked. Kindle fire is gingerbread, fire HD is heavily modified ICS.

For geeks interested in android feature path. http://en.m.wikipedi...version_history

The 2012 model kindle fires (as owned by my brother) are also ICS.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindle_fire

The first generation of Kindle Fire devices run a customized Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.[23]. The second generation devices run a customized Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS
