Nexus 7 Tablet

Thoughts on this? Looks pretty good value compared to any of the others. It's £200 with 16gb of memory and The latest Android Jellybean OS installed. Tempted to get it for my parents as an Anniversary present and for me to play with too

  • Be aware that if you go for 8GB almost 4GB of that is already taken so in real terms you have only 4GB free and NO micro SD expansion slot.

Could be nice, check out some of the Samsung tablets at that price too. Jellybean may soon be available for them too.

It doesn't have a HDMI or a spare memory slot but for £200 I don't see this as a problem. You can easily stream stuff from a NAS or other computer anyway if you do fill all 16gb. I'm thinking for my parents. Both read a lot and my dad is always going on about how he doesn't use the internet enough as he doesn't have a dedicated computer to do it. This seems perfect.

Both this and the Fire (when it FINALLY lands) will break the tablet more mainstream IMO.

But I think for most geeks, 7" will be too cramped and restrictive for most tasks.

I'll probably wait until I can get "hands on" but the 8gb looks good for me. Now of course I wonder if Apple will bring out an iPad "mini" - that would get me buying one as I have loads of apps already purchased, I've never been keen on android (although never used jelly bean obviously) but I find the cost of the iPad too much to justify.

For the first time ever I used iPads a lot this weekend. Using them to fill in details at Goodwood and playing with my cousins. It's good but not £400+ good, Did notice it lag and not respond a few time but this could have been my impatience. 7" sounds about right. The iPad is bigger feels showy and look at me. A few were using them to take photos and it looks awkward.

It's the price that's the biggest selling point. 8gb is fine and 16gb imo is more then enough. People who want more will always want more. Why not manage stuff better and not clog it with crap. Other reasons I'm thinking of getting it is my HTC Desire is getting full but works fine as a phone. All current contracts are too expensive and nothing I'd spend good money on is out yet. I'd quite happily have phone for outdoors and the Nexus would live at home. Not only that my parents could use it, where for reading, looking up recipes or arguing over quiz answers

I found the upgrade from iOS 4.3 to iOS 5 did slow my iPad 2 down. So much for progress and this was long before the the new iPad (the iPad 3 to make it easier) came out and I didn't think that side of the hardware is massively changed. And to be honest, I prefered the previous version of safari without tabbed browsing

Also it has long been rumoured that Apple will drop the current iPod Touch format for a mini iPad, typically 7" format in the region of 200 notes. 4th gen iPod Touch is nearly 2 years old now, there must be an update soon which would give us a clearer idea of the direction Apple will take.

That would seem most logical - I have an iPod Touch and i sometimes use it to "quickly" browse the net for something, as it's always on (in the dock) so quicker than booting up the netbook. However, it is restrictive in terms of window size. I've toyed with the idea of a small tablet - was thinking of the BB Playbook (as I have a BB anyway) but still have reservations especially as RIM now seem to be dropping it. iPad is probably out of my price range so a decent mid priced tablet would be good.

This is what I'll do eventually. My current Sim only is less than £10 a month with 1gb of Internet, 600 mins and unlimited texts. What I'll do tonight is go to an electrical outlet and just compare a 7" tab with a iPad to see how much smaller it is.

It would be 16gb I'd go for. System space could be a problem as apps that can't move like FB get bloated and bigger all the time. My Desire struggles to run now without clearing caches all the time. Main thing it would be for is my parents for surfing the net. I may just wait and see if they do a Nexus 10. I'd have thought there's on in the pipeline

I'm a fan of the 7in size as I find it more usable giving a better balance of size and screen, the 10in tablets seem too big to me for holding one handed and given they are still just phones with big screens - up at that sort of size I prefer an ultralight laptop which is vastly more capable. I had the original Galaxy Tab which I liked until I bought a Note which has made the Tab redundant but it hasn't changed my views towards the 10in tablet particularly with what looks to be viable X86 10in tablets on the way.

The price of the Nexus 7 is very good as is the spec particularly the processor and the screen although the lack of micro SD is a real shame, I can see why they have taken it away but I don't think we're at the stage where streaming everything is viable unless the tablet is rarely going to leave the house.

Possibly but I have devices that have HDMI and I've never used it. All media is either watched on laptops or streamed down to the living room TV wirelessly and that also has the option of connecting a USB stick full of media. Still not 100% on it yet I'll wait to see how it goes.

Most devices these days support a micro-USB to HDMI adaptor.

Does the nexus 7?

Just done a search. The Micro USB doesn't support MHL (the HDMI adapter) so no video output at all.

I have netbook with HDMI out and use it very regularly.

HDMI out on a tablet can be useful if showing pictures round at a friends house on their TV for instance. Another scenario (that I also use my netbook for) is plugging into a hotel TV and watching a HD film.

OMFG, functionality the iPad actually HAS. Has the world stopped spinning or something?

I know... I'm scared some weird apocalyptic events are going to occur...

They probably couldn't add it because knowing Apple they'd sue them. They are already pushing them because of their voice based search. I'm sure if Apple invented an iCar with 4 wheels they'd sue anyone else who made a car ever again.

I got my N7 yesterday (jumped on Ebuyer selling them early before they pulled the option to purchase)

for the money its excellent.. im still not sure what i think of it personally though, having a Ipad3 and also a SGS3 mean that im well-covered as far as web browsing devices go.

Think i'll flog my Kindle Fire and get one, the fire is excellent but not being able to download apps officially is a bit of an arse on.

Having read up a bit, it seems that since android has "merged" the phone/tablet OS - because of the size and resolution of the display on the N7, it uses the phone-based "layout" of android rather than the tablet version.

Ive rooted mine so im going to change the DPI and see if the tablet layout works better.. im not arsed about it looking small as ive got decent eyesight and would rather have more screen real-estate.
