Nexus 7 Tablet

Featured Replies

I so nearly got a Nexus, I was torn between it and the Galaxy Tab. There is no doubt the chip in the Nexus makes things way smoother and the definition is slightly better too. Bit in the end the Galaxy swung it because it has expandable memory and I have lot of junk I like to do stuff with :D Also the screen on the Galaxy is very bright, Also the lower definition means websites appear a little easier to view with my getting older eyesight :D It's a lovely thing the Nexus, but the slightly clunkier Galaxy was the machine for me. I'm getting many hours of use out of a full charge and it's running 4.1.1 (I think). it does get a little warm though

  • Be aware that if you go for 8GB almost 4GB of that is already taken so in real terms you have only 4GB free and NO micro SD expansion slot.

I think the heat thing you'll get on most devices packing big screens and dual/quad cores.

Wifi and blue tooth also generate a fair bit of heat.

So, the N7 is a worthwhile purchase then?

Nice. So is the Nexus 4 just as good as the 7 but with added phone capability? Love my Nexus 7 so far and apart form one dodgy app draining battery it's been great

I've not had android battery drain issues for a long time but a couple of years back I used an app called spare parts to trace what was causing the issues

Was a great app, but stopped working after froyo :(

Why use added Phone Capability when you can use Skype  .

Ah well. Just as well I don't use it any more

Already do :)

Good to know folks, thanks.

Nexus 7 is so cheap for the performance that its almost stealing.

An alternative if you just wish to read ebooks, email and use internet is the kindle fire line. Excellent devices and cheaper than the nexus 7 but run a modified version of android. There is no google play store available (replaced with amazons own store) and the user interface has been completely replaced. Both cam be fixed on rooted devices but to others it might not matter.

I'm loving my N7.

Just easy to get it out, 30 seconds and it's booted from off. Can pretty much do everything I can on the laptop, plus its a bit more social to SWMBO than being glued to the laptop.

She's also a big fan after the 'why do you need one of those as well'. She's trying to use it more than I do now!

30s?

My god, does it use cassette tapes or something?

I never turn my Nexus 7 off. Unless the Youtube app crashes and restarts for me

the nexus 7 uses a 5th specially designed low power core when you lock the screen (unless there is an app with specific permission to run under lock) so should be good to be left in a bag for a few hours with very little charge used.

Yes it is, infact i'm loving the nexus experience (i have a 4 wife has a 7) i'm selling my 6 month old ipad 3 32GB for a 10.1 Nexus.

Boot vids I've seen it is a similar speed to an ipad on cold booting. 30sec was a guess btw.

Better than about 5 min before Microsoft will allow me to use my current machine (6 years old)

My younger brother has a Nexus 7 and my sister has an iPad. I tried the iPad and got bored after 5 minutes. I couldn't put the Nexus 7 down! I will be getting one myself soon I think.

Doesn't cold booting a tablet somewhat miss the point?

Because?

Easier to hold, more engaging to use and most off the apps that you have to pay for on the App Store are free on Google Play.

It would be nice if these threads could be more objective.

How is it "engaging"? Does it hug you? Whisper sweet nothings? Ditto apps? Which apps do you mean? What sort of apps are you using?

As a real example, anyone use the Anki SRS method? Free on 'droid, nearly 20 quid on itunes.

Just on price, the nexus 7 is cheaper than the ipad mini which is winning consumers. Why pay more to do the same things?

Next comes from the fact of rooting and customisation. Android is much easier to customise the way you want it through rooting and custom roms to make it work, look & feel the way you want it.

Now I've played with iphones and ipads of friends and been frustrated that things I can do easily on android are hidden, missing or locked down in iOS. An iphone advocate I know who's had every iphone to date bought a Nexus 7 at christmas off someone that had bought it but couldnt get on with a tablet over a netbook. This is his first android device BTW.

Whilst they love the fact iOS just works and is set up for most needs, the more he's getting into using and customising his N7 he's found himself falling out of love with iOS and looking to ditch his iphone for an android device.

6 months ago he was quick to say how superior iOS/iphone/ipad were over android devices and laugh at my 'quaint' HTC. Have to say a number of friends I know are shifting to android, and tablets purchased this christmas running ICS I'd imagine are partly the reason why. Some couldnt stretch to a ipad mini, so looked at the cheaper Kindle and Nexus' instead and being surprised it's not quite the 2nd best choice they thought it'd be.

What I would say is for those that ditched Android pre Icecream sandwich should try a device running ICS or Jellybean as it's quite a different beast. Just upgraded my HTC from Gingerbread to ICS and there are so many differences and improvements it's like a new handset. Also the devices build during doughnut and Froyo, as with computers may have been great and fast then but are painfully slow compared to newer multi core handsets.

And again we come down to price as iphone contracts are generally more a month than say an S3, or if you prefer, any of the win 8 mobiles. As people tighten their belts this is helping the shift away from Apple IMHO

Gadgetman - I think you've hit the nail ont he head there - my father-in-law has an ipad and whilst I've used it I've never really got on with it and cannot stand the way it is locked down and doesn;t allow you to do very simple things like connnect a memory card and simply 'view' the photos on it - Oh no you have to 'sync' it and take up memory space etc.

That to me was why I personally woudn;t go ipad and why Android appealed. I got an ICS tablet at Christmas for SWMBO and have to say it is appealing to me more and more such that I may dump my netbooks. It's slick, easy to tweak, has good app support, does what I want it to do and isn;t locked down. Ok I need to get used to Android but at £150 was an absolute stel compared to an equivalent ipad...
