Engine managemement light, on for 2 days, off for 2 days,etc...

Featured Replies

Hi. I recently had an oil change on my car and the following day did an 180 mile round trip and my engine management light came on.

When I got home I checked the oil and they had slightly over filled it.

I syringed the extra out and a couple of days later, before I had a chance to get to my usual independent vw guy,the light went out.

A couple of days later it came back on,then two days later off again.

Two days later it has just come back on,I'm going to try to get it booked in but meanwhile, any ideas?

I had a similar fault recently and it was an intermittent inlet manifold sensor fault. VCDS would show you the fault but the light would come on and then go out again after a few days.

Thanks TvRS, I'll hopefully know if it's that when I get the code read.

How much did it cost you to put right.

It was under warranty so I don't know how much it would have cost.

Had similar in my car, but after a couple of weeks of being on and off it stayed on continuously. Turned out to be a faulty "manifold flap sensor" which was replaced under warranty yesterday. Was told if outside warranty it would have cost >£400. I assume this was for the part alone.

Should add that this was on a 2010 2.0 TSI vRS with 43k miles.

Light came on about 5 days ago and stayed on this time.

Had car plugged in at local vag independent and they reckon it's camshaft timing sensor.

Got it booked in for next friday, will let you know how I've gone on.

Im still puzzled as to how you managed to syringe the oil out??

with a syringe.

Ah of course a syringe that went down through the oil galleries and into the sump....silly me.

PMSL brilliantly sarcastic :)

Flexible turkey baster would be my bet.

i got a 100mm syringe with a piece of tube the same length as the dipstick and put it down the dipstick hole.

I then syringed the oil out, emptied into an old bottle and kept repeating until I had the correct level, simples.

That explains it then, I wasnt being funny just couldnt by conventional thinking get to grasps with it lol good thinking batman ;-)

I got an intermittent "Exhaust System Fault" light (the one that looks like a picture of the engine) come up for a few days, on one day, off the next,

Booked the car in to my local indy - DSB Autocare who found that the wire from the inlet temp sensor had rubbed on the starter motor casing and was almost severed. David replaced the wire and Hey Presto! Sorted. Cheap as chips too!

He gave me the VAGCOM printout so I can check out the fault code tomorrow if you want to know it.

I had the engine management light too, in the way described above. It was a "manifold" fault replaced under warranty (couldnt get any more details than that from the receptionist).

Got car done today at Volks-tek in dronfield.Turned out it was a sensor on top of the engine(something to do with the variable valve timing I think)

The plastic engine cover had been rubbing on it.

A bit of soldering and it was sorted,30 quid, well pleased.
