Cheapest insurance I could find - 18yr old

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd let people know. After many hours of searching I appear to have found vaguely cheap car insurance/car for a young driver (family member).

  • 18 Year old male
  • Passed less than a year
  • full time employment
  • Not a home owner
  • Single
  • no no-claims
  • D cat risk area (high risk of theft etc)
  • 6k miles / year
  • Social, Domestic and pleasure + Commuting to single place of work

The cheapest car and insurance combo I could find was a 2003 Citroen C1 Vibe 1.0 Petrol at £2300 and an insurance policy from a company called "insure the box" for £1500/year (including the cost of installing a tracker to monitor the driving) with me as a named driver and a £1000 excess.

It was suggested that someone "fronted" his insurance but I'm certainly not doing it and not having anything to do with it (apart from being illegal I have enough problems keeping my no claims myself!)

He really wanted a Fiesta but they're just too expensive to insure. I literally can't find anything cheaper to insure, even stuff like pass plus and AIM doesn't seem to make a difference for such an inexperienced driver.

  • 8 months later...

My first year was as follows:

17 year old male

passed less than a year

1.4 fabia (rougly IG 3 on old grouping system)

colour black

full time education

not a homeowner

single

no no-claims

unsure of theft risk but live on a main road so not low

2k miles a year

SDP+C

Main driver with 2 parents as named drivers

both 5+ years NCB

both access to other cars

The cheapest i found without a box (which was the way i wanted to go) was £3600 with Admiral Multicar.

Coming up to a year now and looking Admiral Single car (too much hassle between me and my dad with multicar.

Same details but 1 year driving 1 year NCB 4k mileage PA and its around £900-£1100 at the min with the worst one at £2600.

the first year is always going to be high but it drops dramatically after the first year so its better to make sure that you get the first year over with nice and clean with no bumps or scrapes and get your own NCB IMHO.

Pass Plus has now pretty much become obsolete for insurance but is still great experience for such a small price. Did you have a look at Institute for Advanced Motorists? it made a decnt amount of difference for me but i didnt take it as i didnt have the money spare to go on the IAM courses.

if you want any more details about mine then feel free to contact me :)

Son has been driving now for 6 months 17 year old seat arosa with box £2.600.00 but its gone down to £800 when he checks on line so yes first 12 months is ridiculous
