Heated door mirrors...................... doh.

Featured Replies

In the car this morning and switched on the heated front and rear windows (0600hrs) and wondered why the door mirrors did not clear. (Most cars when you switch on the rear window will automatically operate the door mirrors)

Re-read the manual and saw that there is a seperate switch position for the door mirrors...doh

You can't (in my case) see that little icon from the drivers seat.:happy::blush:

Same here Danny - it's top right isn';t it? I can't see it either.

If you leave the switch in the heated position does it cut off at any point I wonder?

why are using them this time of the year ??

At that time 0600hrs it was very misty with lots of dew on the cars glass, plus as we got in the car the change in temperature allowed the car to mist up in the first minute.

Need to check that and if it does I presume that if you leave the switch in the "on" position it will come back each time you start the car or does it require a "re-set".

A few years ago I had a BMW E46 and the heated mirrors were designed to stay on all the time that the engine was running. Never really paid much attention to it until I moved on to my next car (Passat), then I noticed the mirrors misting up mid-journey whilst driving down the road in the autumn / spring. I now leave the mirrors on my A4 in the heated position all of the time, never had any sort of problem with it.

Default is that both the electric heating for rear window and heated mirrors will cut out after 10 minutes. You then need to turn them back on again.

For the rear window, the light on the button will go out. For the mirrors, there is no indicator, just change the switch position to something else and then back again.

The timeout can be adjusted. Central electronics controller, adaptation channel 3 as per VCDS:

Rear Window & Outside Mirror Heater Activation Time

Time which the Rear Window and Outside Mirror Heater will be active.

Range: 1...254 Minutes

Resolution: 1 Minute

I turned mine up to 20 minutes as I found 10 too short.

The only PITA when leaving them on Heated position is when you reverse, the mirror will not tilt unless its in the L position.

I use mine toi clear raindrops which it does very effectivley......God.....Dont you just love British Summers!!!!......

Tilting in reverse???? That sounds good (i think) - which model/trim and is it helpful?

Tilting in reverse only works if you have the memory seats, see your manual.

The actual requirement is that the door controller is a 'MAX' model and that your mirror motors have the rheostats in them for position sensing. It's true that these are automatically optioned with memory seats but the motors can be retrofitted or are sometimes installed even without memory seats.

Unfortunately VAG doesn't sell the motors by themselves, you have to buy the whole mirror mount units and they are a crazy price (last time I looked something like $600AU).
