Strange fluid leak, what the heck is it?

Featured Replies

front offside, i have drips coming down directly under headlight on to ground through side plastics behind bumper.

Looks like water, but when rubbing between my fingers feels as though it has some lubricity.

Not Oil, Not brake fluid (mines blue), Not PAS Fluid (red/pink), Not coolant.

Tasted it and compared it on tip of toungue to all other fluids, totally different and very sour/acidic/salty taste. Even undid aircon and couldnt match fluid drips but could be as thats not conclusive.

Anything else it could be?

Thanks

Washer bottle?

+1

sorry also compared it to washer bottle, totally different consistency, and taste :giggle: . I am erring to the side of aircon as mine dont work for some reason but hey i live in scotland, where the heater only goes off on august 5th between 2 and 5 p.m

So all car related fluids removed from equation, as Sherlock would say ,once all reasonable things ae ruled out, that remaining, however improbable is the solution .Looks like solution is eau de Tom . Not exactly "Water of life"

still more dripping, no fluid level change, proper head scratcher

Aircon pump oil.

Suspect you have a leak somewhere in your aircon system!

  • Author

at least thats the one thing i dont use

Yes, but you don't want the pump to fail. It may end up seizing. Bear in mind how it is driven...

  • Author

ah right so locate and fix should be the next step then. This never ends, thanks

cancel that, the pump isnt run unless the clutch in it is engaged, until that point its run by the bearings, so even if pump is seized it should still turn freely with clutch dissengaged.

Or am i wrong?

Yes, but if you do switch it on even inadvertently, it puts hellish strain on the belt/engine.

I'll never forget finding my volvo flat after leaving it running for ten minutes (lights were on being a combo), wasn't sure why the engine had cut out, struggled like hell to move it out of the way of my garage to get the life's car out to jump mine, started it with ease, put the wires car back, moved mine again, left in running to put some juice back in (put a meter on it and the alternator was working fine) and lo and behold come back 10 mins later to an even flatter non-running car. Little did I know the aircon was buggered OR that it was switched on, until I went through it all again and discovered the load on the engine when the pump kicked in.

As it turned out, the pump was fine three days later, but it didn't enjoy the complete soaking in coolant it received the day before when a hose went.

But yes, you are completely right.

my aircon hasnt worked since 2006, doesnt turn on at all, so heres hoping im safe as is. i might get around to measuring up and engineering an aircon pump delete pulley. Made one for a bluebird i had years ago, few tack welds line up holes et voila, put a we idler on it - perfect

The aircon pulley on an ALH is an idler pulley. The compressor shaft doesn't turn unless the magnetic clutch is engaged. Disconnect the 2-pin plug at the compressor and you're good.

spot on - plug off. cheers

Why didn't I think of that... so flippin' simple!!!!!!

Im feeling similar actually. The phrase even it it smacked me in the face comes to mind
