VRS - Slight Wobble/Clunckiness in Steering

Featured Replies

Hi,

My VRS sems to have an annoying issue with the steering/suspension.

When steering you feel a slight clunkiness and sort of wobbliness through the wheel.

The rougher the surface the worse it is, but it doesn’t feel like play in the steering parts i.e. the rack or tie rods.

In the last 5000 miles the car has had new console bushes and drop links so its not them. The car itself is on 60k.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

I had a knock and turned out to be the rack. Changed all the bushes too as thought it was them.

Getting it replaced next week. So should be back to silence lol.

Have you had it checked out on a ramp? Don't think you can tell unless you take off the tie rods

My car on 58k

Thanks for the reply.

Its not been on a ramp yet, I was hoping to get some ideas of what to look for first as I doubt its going to be something obvious.

As its so subtle (but very annoying) I doubt you would be able to manaully feel any play etc

It sounds daft, but it doesnt feel like play in the rack becasue I've had that in a previous car and the knock was very sharp in your hand. This is like something else is knocking, but passing the sensations on through the steering wheel.

Consider ball joints as a possible cause...

Have you checked the fluid level in the reservoir under battery?

Just a quick update on this…

I changed the shock absorbers and the car is now pretty much perfect. So much better over bumps and the handling is now actually predictable.

when you changed the shock absorbers did you check the bearings in the strut tops as they feel really juddery when severely worn.

I changed the top mounts (both bits) and they were like new to be fair - wish I hadnt bought new ones really.
