Skoda reputation... Still encountering prejudice?

Featured Replies

I was wondering whether anyone else still encounters the ridiculous attitude that some people have to Skoda? It only took one drive for me to realise that the cars themselves are superb, and the modern styling is certainly to my taste, but some people STILL think that the cars themselves say something negative about the driver!

A friend has recently crashed their 10 year old BMW 3 series and has been looking for a replacement. They want something cheap to buy, economical to run and with space for kids and luggage. I said 'that sounds like you need to have a look at a Fabia diesel. It ticks all of those boxes and mine is an absolute pleaure to drive.' The response was unexpected. 'I wouldn't be seen dead in a Skoda...'

I was a little hurt by this - I love my car and everyone who has been in it has had nothing but compliments about it, but this person would, it seems, rather be seen in a clapped out Beamer than a brand new Skoda!

I'm taking delivery of my Monte Carlo in a couple of weeks. I'm going to call round and see them when I've got it. I will be intrigued to see where they can find fault with one of the best looking hatchbacks on the road...

Be grateful, the only reason why they are cheaper than an equivalent spec Polo is for exactly this reason.

IF you could buy the same spec Polo for the same money as a Fabia then most people would, ATEOTD the Fabia is never going to look as nice as the Polo does IMO.

For the same reason I would rather have an A6 Avanti ... if I could of bought one with the same spec for the price of my Superb, but I can't so I didn't.

Yes all the time, but that's what keeps the prices low and the service good -otherwise they'd get complacent like VW. If people have stupid notions then that's their problem. My little Fabia is the most 'satisfying' car I've ever had, it's cheap to buy and run, has everything I want in a car and is immensely practical and in 20K miles has given me no problems at all save for a squeaky pedal which was very promptly replaced.

I looked at buying a new BMW once, I had to walk away as I just couldn't ever see myself driving one.

Never had anyone say anything other than skodas have come on a lot since the old days, been thinking of changing the fabia for something with 3 proper seats in the back, most of them french, Skodas quality if far better than any french car I have looked at and (my opinion) but with my budget may have to keep the fabia for another year possible.

Most younger drivers are enlightened, but a lot of older ones are not, in 2006 when I bought my vRS a guy at work , who had a H reg (1990) Escort Eclipse (XR2 lookalike) said he would never buy a Skoda, but happy to drive a rusty Ford. My sister in law is the same, Husband had a BMW 328,( company car ) got rid and now drives a Kia Sorrento with scraped corners, (she cant park ) and although I have nothing against Kia ( especially the new breed ) she is of the believe she drives a prestigious mark :giggle:

I brought this subject up a couple of weeks ago...this was my recent experience.

This topic never gets old... Why do you even care what somebody with minimal to no knowledge at all regarding modern cars, thinks about yours? It's not a coincidence that every time such a story is brought up, it's about "that lady next door", or a clueless colleague at work etc. etc. Are these people's opinions really important to you?

All the people that I know they know about cars and have either professionally or just out of pure interest been seriously involved with them over the years have never ever said to me a bad thing about skodas and their quality. Why the heck should I mind if my ignorant preoccupied neighbor thinks Skodas are bad? Just because almost everybody has a car that doesn't mean he also knows what he is talking about... In fact you can always make good fun of them If you pose them a few simple questions which they will of course be unable to answer reasonably. If you have THAT much free time to lose that is....

I don't 'care' about other peoples lack of knowledge about modern cars at all, other people's opinions aren't really important to me either - My original post was a light-hearted one, I was having a bit of fun, a laugh, a joke - nothing more. Rest assured, it has not caused me to question my choice of car whatsoever.

Reminds me of this fag

It's only my brother-in-law who's light heartedly mocked our new VRS's Skoda badge, it's probably because he has an Aston DBS, Porsche Panamera, Audi Q7 and a new mini cooper. He did say though... remove the badges and he'd have one!

NO! I get told frequently what good cars they are. I'm old and so are my friends so don't believe theres an old young divide. Everyone knows the quality of Skodas these days but one or two are jealous they never bought one and paid over the odds for a shed.!! All this is backed up by the motoring press and the likes of JD power surveys. ENJOY YOUR SKODA YOU'LL BE HARD PRESSED TO BUY BETTER FOR THE MONEY.

Ask them if they know which car holds the IRC ie the F2 of rallying, crown? Yes a Fabia. (with Skoda UK and Andreas Michelson)

And which car hold the UK speed records for cars under 1500 cc? Yes the Fabia again (MSA record criusing at over 135 mph).

And which car hold the 2 litre turbocharged production car land speed record at Bonneville? A Skoda Octavia. (at over 227 mph).
