Creaking when steering?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Have a strange creaking noise coming from the steering when steering fairly tightly to the left or right.

It doesn't do it when i only steer lightly for example going around the average roundabout but when i steer it more severely for example to pull into my drive way it creaks.

It sounds like the creak is almost in the car and comes from steering column?

Could it be a bearing or something like that?

Not really very mechanically minded so any advice or thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks,

Coiner

Hi,

I had an issue like this on my car, apart from it was noticable when going over humps/turning even gently, and it sounded unbelievably loud! I took mine to Skoda and they said it was the Console bushes (which to the best of my knowledge are the rubber bushes on the suspension). They told me it was around £270 all in to get done as it was 2 hours labour plus parts (about £80).

I luckily had some warranty on my car from when I bought it last year and it managed to get done for free, but if you feel up to it it isn't a hard job to change them. Have a look online on how to change your suspension bushes, it should tell you how.

Like I said it may be this, sounds very familiar to what I had. Hope this helps

Dave

may also be where the column goes through the bulk head, it will be shrouded with rubber, get some wd40 on it followed by a bit of grease, wd40 to penetrate grease to feed it over time, may just be dry.

Or its your elbows, in which case, glucosamine hcl with chondroitin, and 6grams of omega 3 everyday, and some msm (shark cartilage)

While your at it check shoulder joints, rotater cuffs, and lavata scapulae.

I had this, Turned out to be the coating had come off the arb and the bushes were worn. So replaced it all.

Thanks for the advice. Will investigate and hopefully find the cause.

Sounds to me like its coming from one place and not too far from the steering wheel.

would a knackered bump stop possibly result in a creaking noise?

unlikely unless your car is lowered to the ground

Could even be engine mount or dogbone mount. try it at low speed with the clutch in/out - to eliminate drivetrain or mounts from the consideration.
