Hi All,

I will soon be buying a 2010 Fabia 1 HTP 6 valve, with 8k miles on it. I was impressed during the test drive with the overall build quality of the car with one exception: intrusive tyre noise at 65-70 mph. Is this normal ? The car has 16" steel wheels fitted .I am looking to reduce my overall motoring costs (mostly a 25 mile daily commute) as my current car is a touch thirsty, deeply impractical and the cost of spares is prohibitive. Hopefully the Fabia will prove to be a lot cheaper to run.

This looks like a well informed and friendly forum...more so than some out "there"

Hi and Welcome to Briskoda

Welcome aboard, what car are driving at the moment then??

Welcome to Briskoda,

At the end of the day tyres can be changed for quieter ones.

I've heard a lot of the eco tyres can be a bit on the loud side.

Does it have a set of those type of tyre fitted?

Talking of loud tyres, I drove a mini cooper last week running on those

run flat tyres BMW seem to favour.

They were quite loud I thought, handled bloody well on them though!

In my Fabia, on the same bend at 70mph I am on 3 wheels but the

Mini went around the same bend 20mph faster with all 4 on the ground.

It felt like it could have gone a fair bit quicker as well :o

Really surprised me...

I'm guessing it may well be the 1992 Lotus Elan SE that's in his signature? :wonder:

Welcome along 'oldschool', I seem to remember your old car being voted the best handling front wheel drive car in the world? I was enthusing over one at a classic car rally this week!

Thanks for the welcome guys. My current daily driver is indeed the Lotus. Great fun when it's not raining. I now have 2 grandchildren to consider, hence the choice of the Fabia as a solid dependable hack. I loved the sound of its exhaust..reminded me of a 3 cylinder 'bike. Can't wait to see what a Skoda is like to live with....had a CZ 250 twin a few years back..should never have sold it....ah the benifit of hindsight eh ?

Welcome to the forum where there's no badge snobbery. For that sort of commute. I'd have suggested one that runs on THE FUEL ( problem is that there is fuel snobbery :giggle: ). One other thing to check - at 8k ,it's pretty close to a service ( if the 2010 ones follow the older mark timings), so if a garage, might be worth asking for either a service before getting, or at 10k. Hi and welcome aboard.

Thanks for the advice VWD, it's recently had a service based on time rather than mileage. The frustration for me is that I am buying from a colleague who won't get his new car for a further 3 weeks , so I will have to be patient.I have run numerous diesels over the years and found little difference in consumption, compared to petrol, during my commute, probably because I live in a very hilly area (halfway up a mountain in fact)They only really came into their own on long motorway runs.My decision to go for the Fabia was strongly influenced by my son being a master mechanic at a main VAG dealership in Bristol...so I know that any future servicing etc will be done properly and economically.

Apparently the 1.2 litre 6 valve is known in the trade as the "sewing machine" engine and he is concerned that I will miss the power of the Lotus ( I can't afford to run both) but assured me that the Fabia is a well-made car, although he is naturally biased in favour of VW cars.

I tried a Polo but it just felt cramped for my 6 foot frame and not particularly good value for money.

At 62 yrs old I am looking forward to the next "phase" of my motoring career, and, if I feel the need for speed I can always borrow his Golf GTI..!

Hello oldschool and welcome along

Hi and a belated welcome, I too had a CZ250 , after my MZ150 in the 70s, I also had a VT250F a Jota 1000 a CBX and a special edition , black and gold Motto Guzzi 850 Le Mans
