Suspect wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

Ok so ive had some road noise since buying the car a few months back. When i picked her up she had odd tyres all round and pulled to the left slightly so put most of it down to that although recently I had begun to suspect a wheel bearing. I've now sorted the non matching tyre issue (at least on the front axle) and today had the tracking done. Most of the noise has now gone away but after a quick drive down my local dual carriageway I do still have a slight noise when changing lanes to the right or turning slighty right (totally silent when turning to left). I am now suspecting a wheel bearing but which one?? The noise seems to be coming from the front end although on checking all 4 wheels with car off the ground there is a tiny minute bit of movement in the rear NS wheel although this wheel spins freely and very smoothly. The front NS wheel however has no movement but doesnt spin too freely.

So now I cant decide whether the front NS bearing is going or maybe just the brake binding to cause the friction or whether its the rear NS bearing failing. Or of course if im really unlucky both. Can I really be that Unlucky????

I know I can get the rear done cheap if its that one as its built into the hub but what cost can I expect to pay for the front?

Cheers

have u larger than standard alloyys ??? i found very bad road noise form a previous octy which had 18inch alloys on it,,, or since u said the front near side has some resistance in it ,id be suspicious of the bearing on that side

could also be worth checking the drop links for play?

Both bearings on my VRS were rough when spun, had them both replaced, made a horrible noise that was hard to pin down which side.

Running standard spiders at the mo but looking to upgrade to 18's in the near future hence wanting to make sure things are right before putting any more stress on parts. Thanks for the help guys I will investigate the NS front a bit further. Checked drop links a week or so ago and they were nice and firm with no play.

Hi Dazz, I've currently got a noisey offside front bearing on the wifes Fabia. It's very apparent when left cornering and less so in a straight line. If you search the forum there are articles on bearing detection and replacement. I recently obtained 4 localised quotes ranging between 200 to 240 quid. Too dear for me I'm afraid so have ordered in replacement assembly (30 quid) and will do in conjunction with my lad. Best of luck with that mate

Turning right so the weight is on the n/s.

Either your front or your rear on that side.
