The irony - how I laughed!

Featured Replies

I forgot to post about this when it happened!

Before Christmas I was trying to sell my Black Octavia vRS (never raced or rallied ;) ), chipped by Jabba and immaculate but was having little luck privately. I called the local dealer to see if they'd buy it off me. I was expecting a low price but wanted rid as I had my eye on another car. All was going well until I mentioned the car had a Jabbachip. "Oh we don't want it then sir. These cars are more difficult to sell and are very unreliable. We won't even service them as they fool our equipment  " they said.

In the new year, we traded in my Octavia vRS for an Audi A3 1.8T for the wife. Lancaster Audi in Manchester said the car would go straight to auction.

At the beginning of February I had a call from the local Skoda dealer." Mr Sherwen, we've got your old car and was wondering if you could tell us what the small dial beside the steering wheel does?"

"That's a boost controller." I replied.

"So is the car chipped?"

"Yes, to 230bhp"

"Oh."

"Do you remember refusing to buy the car off me as you didn't touch modified cars?"

"Yes. Good bye"

:D:D:D:D:D

So if you have bought a second hand Octy from a Cumbrian dealer, you should check to see what you have got

Steve

This leads me on to a serious question.

I thought the Jabba remap was just a remap of the ECU. Does it also involve the installation of a boost dial or is that optional?

Boost dial can be bought separatly, the Jabba remap is just a remap of the ECU

Steve - Good story, as for fooling there equipment, I bet in reality they wouldnt even know it is remapped when serviceing the car :D

thats optional

Excellent! Many thanks

Cra

i got one if them and use it regularly. when bimbling round town i have it set low (around 11psi) for better economy and when i want some some i whack it up(hits about20psi) and floor it for big smiles

Bengie, You'd best start to budget for a new turbo...seen a high boost K03 (the 4x4's turbo is not exactly thr same as the AUQ one...anyway I've seen the remains on one that was not agressively mapped but driven hard...

It seemed to drive ok, but was cracked and the rotor was bent to hell and back.

Colin are you saying that the 4x4 turbo can handle high boost but the K03 cannot?

Also I thought that the boost controller had the same boost as the normal jabba remap but with the facility to turn the boost/map down?

already am ;)

i was told it was perfectly safe by the tuner that mapped it, that they didn't push them that far purposely like others so that engine/turbo life wasn't drasticly affected

The MY2000 4X4 (ARX) was fitted with the same turbo as the AGU engine, ie PN: 06A 145 704L. Since MY2001 the 4X4 has shared the same turbo as the AUM and AUQ, ie PN: 06A 145 713D. I believe from previous posts that Ian's had the earlier turbo.

but what exactly is the difference?? is one better or are they much of a muchness. not that it bothers me as i want't a different one by the end of the year preferably

Just saying what I've seen, not all parts are the same. It was visibily different (and knackered) to one that came off (exactly the same fittment) a vRS.

I don't think it would matter who tuned it to be honest....perhaps just a duff part, none the less it brought back to me the old wifes tale of turbos and 60-100k failures that Jap car typically had.

Don't read to much into it, just be prepared.

There's a big difference. Early turbo is commonly known as K03 and good for around 200bhp. Late turbo is K03S and good for 230+bhp.

K03S is a common upgrade for AGU engined Golfs and Ibiza Cupras that only ever came with the K03.

Double the amount on vanes on the inlet turbine iirc on the K03s

I think on the later 4x4 it differs slightly to the vRS in the positions of the oil and coolant lines.

Think K03 has 8 and the K03S has 12.

One I saw was of a Y reg...

Like I say perhaps just unluck part, then again the sump had been cracked a few times...so not exactly a model engine.

Would happily concur with that difference...with the haldex losses it felt like more in straights on track :(

Just the gearing helps.

However the irony of the dearler buying it it brilliant. They and anybody driving it should not be worried by it, they just have to be mindfull when selling it...if anything for a few it makes it more attractive as they can get more for less (oooh dunno it's remapped gov).

Then again the dealers need to put food on the table aswell...so cumbria you say, Jabba'd Octy...sounds like a bargin is to be had sirs!

Yeah, knock 'em down because of the remap arguing about insurance etc..

Also a good way of having a remapped car under warranty and the dealer can't argue as that's the spec it was sold as.

does mine on a 51 plate have the K03s or k03 ??

nice story...lmao...

on the topic of boost controllers i was told by jabba that I will only benifit from one if im running two types of fuel 95ron and 97ron make it run smoother by turning down when 95 is in and turn it up when 97 is in.... so i said well i only ever run 95 so wont bother and save the money..

Joel

How did they not spot the boost dial when they were buying it

Presume they just bought it 'blind' as it were.

I want a boost dial now! I would be quite excited about finding a car like that on a forecourt. If they had a standard vRS and a jabbad one sitting side by side I know which one would tempt me more :D

The parts list for the turbocharger shows that the 2001> 4X4 has a different oil return line to the AUM and AUQ.

All the DBW 1.8T engines - with the exception of the MY2000 4X4 - have the later turbocharger often referred to as the K03s.

Thanks Denis, that's what I was thinking of. :)
