Turbo Problems.... STILL! *FIXED*

Featured Replies

Ive not long had my turbo changed, and at first we took the turbo off and found that the turbo was a mess, with the impeller missing and the shaft and bearings all knackered. After fitting it back to the car after a repair, i was still having problems, which turned out to the boost pipe that connects to the turbo coming from the intercooler, not the bottom one connected to the intercooler, but the top one. I have been driving it since and the whistle seems to be getting louder again and its chucking out loads of black smoke. Does this sound like a leaking boost pipe of some kind?

The first picture below shows the turbo when we first got it off with the impeller missing and parts of it stuck inside, and the second one shows what we found in the turbo, the part being the shaft that holds the impeller in place.

yes sounds like leaky boost pipe somewhere. Black smoke the result of fuel to match boost, boost escaping thus too much fuel being injected. Follow every inch of pipe mate, crack/split/gap somewhere me thinks

Sounds like a split/loose boost pipe to me personal buddy

Lol u beat me to it

hehe, well it reassured my diagnosis.

Cheers for the replies guys. Like i said, i have already replaced one pipe, so I'm hoping that the hose that goes to the intercooler is probably loose. I'm sure last time i looked there was little bits of oil on it, is that anything to worry about?

nah its common for there to be some oil sweating through seals etc, if anything it tells you there is a pipe leak

I'm just hoping its not the same pipe, as it cost me £125 last time... It doesn't sound really bad, but i dont feel like it is boosting correctly, don't get me wrong it still pulls, but doesnt seem as quick as it did before, so the only thing like everyone seems to be saying is that there is a leak somewhere. Is it mainly the pipes from the intercooler to the turbo that are the problem?

UsuAlly yes. But dont disregard checking the rest. I know some have had to use screws to hold the intercooler pipes on.

Ah right... just hoping that it is just a pipe and not the turbo again, but i guess the turbo wouldnt be boosting if the turbo had gone again, plus with it whistling so badly and probably having a boost leak, when the turbo be overspeeding?

Stuff paying £125 for a crap designed hose!

Alloy adaptors can be bought from forge and you can chop up some silicone to fit!

I think if there are anymore pipes split, i will go for forge pipes.should hopefully get chance to have a look a little later on.

I uave most standard intercooler pipes if u need any just drop me a pm mate can sort sumit out

If yours are still popping apart - even cheaper than replacing them is to stick some self tappers in there and fix them properly :)

Cost - £2 for a bag of screws.

I will have to let you know later Jasvrs.

That pipe that you are showing Softscoop is completely fine, its the pipes that you have to get under the car to see that i am having problems with. But if they are lose i will get some self tappers.

I manged to get to the bottom intercooler pipe and seemed to have a slight gap in it, but nothing major. I have drove the car today and still alot of smoke and not sounding good.

Ive manged to get hold of some axle stands and a jack fro tomorrow so will be checking all the pipes thoroughly tomorrow, especially the ones going to the turbo.

Its really knocked me back with the car.

If your close to shropshire I can put it on the ramp for you if that's Easyer to help you out?

Thanks for the offer.. Ive just looked on google maps, and your approximately an hour and three quarters away. I will see how i get on tomorrow, if i'm still struggling to find anything i will take to a mate of mines garage, just didnt want to be pestering them with small jobs when they have a lot of work on as it is. Hopefully find something tomorrow.

Thanks again

Ow no problem sorry your to far really don't mind helping people out if they are stuck or have a problem :)

No worries hope its as simple as a split or fault pipe

Right, had a look at the all the pipes. I don't know the name of the pipe but one was slightly loose. Pushed it back on and the noise has definately calmed down. Sounds more like a turbo now. Still got abit of black smoke coming out the back but the same as it used to be now. Very happy it is now sorted.

well done chap, black smoke is a good thing in moderation on a VAG car
