RE: Oil for VRS

Featured Replies

have checked the list but want to know if Castrol GTD PLUS will be okay?

its 10W 40 i belive?

has its got to be 5W??

ta

You want oil that says on it VW spec 505.01. Nothing else will do.

506.01 will ;)

506.01 will ;)

We've had this before though  I'm sure it was said 506 was for variable servicing? Fabia's aren't on variable, only Octi's and Superb's.

Indeed Fabia's dont run on variable, but 506.01 tops 505.01 in a game of oil top trumps.

And there is no mechanical difference in the engines if its on variable or not its just the car around it.

Most garages that have bulk Castrol oil just have 506.01 and use that in everything VAG wise that is PD engined.

well thats abit ****, seeing as i've brought it already lol

ah well :D cheers guys

use Millers 505.01. Take it with you to servicing and save some money. you can buy it all over the place now. If you can't find any phone Millers and ask for the name of a stockist. I found three within ten miles. Seems to be

506.01 will ;)

506.01 Won't do. It is the wrong viscosity and should not be used, it even says so on the Castrol tub that it comes in. You must use 505.01

Yes it will do, trust me I know a little about this.

506.01 IS used in PD engined cars on variable. There is NO mechanical difference betweeen an ASZ engine on variable and an ASZ engine on fixed servcing. So the oil is suitable for both.

Had a look in a local Motorworld yesterday and they had Castrol GTD Plus but this did not mention 505.01 (although the sticky on this topic mentions Castrol GTD), however Castrol GTD Magnetec recommended for VAG 505.00 as was Duckhams fully synthetic. Is 505.00 OK to use?

Is 505.00 OK to use?
No. A list of suitable oils is in our FAQs here. There is a Castrol oil on the list, but it isn't one that you mention.

And here is an explanation of why you must use an oil specifically formulated for the PD engine:

As this has been asked on several occasions I thought it would be wise to explain the background to the VW 505.01 oil and why it's so important to use it in a PD engine.

It is vitally important to use a PD oil in the PD engine due to the pump.

The VW pd engines are very severe on the oil' date=' the mechanical fuel pump delivers fuel at approx. 25,000 psi !!!!! to enable a very precise injector spray pattern which, in turn, gives excellent driving characteristics.

The very high loads on the fuel pump will lead to VI improver shear down and oil viscosity loss if the engine is operated on lesser oils.

The surest way to shorten the life of your engine is to ignore this advice.

I've seen the list but if you look at a bottle of Castrol GTD it does not even mention 505.01, yet GTD Magnetec does (505.00). So whats the big difference between 505,00 and 505.01?

I see Lummox's arguments and reckon they do make sense. My only feeling is that if 506 was ok, why not print it in the manual? For that reason only, I'd certainly give the car straight back after a service if 506 had been used.

505.00 is for non-pd engines I believe?

Just as a side point to make SEAT advise 506.01 oil for the 160 bhp Ibiza Cupra TDi.

And SEAT's dont run variable.

Thats because SEAT owners aren't intelligent enough to look after a car, let alone buy a decent one

Hmm, maybe it's just me then who would rather use the stuff that was intended from day one. But I guess it's handy to know if you can't get hold of any and need some oil quick, I found 506 was easier to get hold of.

There are at least 2 versions of Castrol GTD - the correct one for PD engines is called Castrol GTD 505 01.The crucial difference between the 2 oils is that 505 00 is not suitable for PD engines.

Thanks for that I just want to make sure I get the right stuff. I can't find any of the oils on the list up here (Bedlington,Northumberland). I'll probably have to go to the dealers but I bet they're expensive.

Spottydog,

www.millersoils.com try and find a local outlet and you can pick up 5 litres for less than

Dealer wasn't extremely overpriced :)

Mine was, they would sell me any in a bottle, but would top my oil up for

god what did i start? lol

either way i went to a dealer and asked for some oil for fabia vrs, they said they only have in 5litre tubs, so the mechanic toped it up for free :D

but they asked if it was long life or normal?

i said i duno, its on 10k serivce not the 20k services.

hope they put the right stuff in! lol

 :thumbdwn: You're only jealouse because us SEAT's get more powerful engines than you!! ;):D

In terms of oil, always use the correct VW type for your engine... afterall, it is the life blood of your car, and using the wrong time could end up costing you your engine.

Millers does seem to get recommended for you sooties everywhere I look tho, so must be good stuff!! ;)

Just to back up what some have said.

VW505.01 is what you want, you can always get it from me at a good price.

VW506.01 you can also use, but it was designed for exteneded drain intervals, the 0w-30 is much more expensive and you dont need it.

Cheers

Guy.
