Spark plug blown out

Featured Replies

Hello,

Has anybody had the following happen before? I was driving my Octavia vRS up the road, I put my foot down, and the engine emitted a loud bang and started sounding like a Lister diesel! Nothing was visibly wrong in the engine compartment, so I came to the conclusion it must be a coil pack gone. When I took the engine cover off the number two coil pack was sitting about an inch higher than the others. I pulled it out, and the entire spark plug came with it . Is this possible under normal circumstances, or does it suggest the plug wasn't put in properly in the first place? Only the first three threads on the plug are damaged, and it seems to be a similar story in the cylinder head although it's hard to see clearly. I have my suspicions that whoever put the plug in crossed the thread and didn't do it up all the way. What do you think? I have contacted the dealer who last serviced the car, and they have offered to send someone round to take a look. I really hope it's just a matter of replacing the spark plug and the now damaged coil pack, as the car is just out of warranty :worried:

Oh dear.

I think you have already determined the cause yourself. Alloy heads are fragile at the best of times. I would be concerned about swarf entering the bore if you start trying to screw it back in and cutting the damaged thread away.

Yes, I have heard of it before. Get professional help to sort the problem out.

Surely if it was fitted by a dealer that dealer should cover this cost as well then?

Yes - if they accept that they are responsible...

Ballamy's of Shoreham, who did my 40K service, sent someone round first thing this morning to sort the problem out. He was able to get the car running again, after carefully replacing the spark plug and checking that all was okay. I'll be taking the car in on Tuesday, when they will check all the plugs and replace the slightly bent coil pack, at no cost to me. Now that's what I call service

A good result.
