Alloy refurb project - White Spiders ;)

Featured Replies

Well I have gone and bought myself a set of 17" occy spiders from a breakers yard and for £145 for 5 including delivery didn't seem half bad!

Plan is to clean them up a bit and go white :) Think they will look really good on my red fabia

Just been reading Pastyboy's refurb thread so I have a guide book ;)

A few questions to get started though, should I paint the inside of the rim black or do the whole lot white?

What are people's thoughts on plasidip? Or should I do it properly with paint?

If so which white? :)

Will keep this thread up to date with how it's going and some pics!

Anything else I should consider?

Have you got a link to the refurb thread?

Which Pastyboy one or mine? If its the latter, you are in it :) its a work in progress or will be when the wheels get delivered this week.

I'd do the inner barrels black, saves a lot of hard work keeping them clean, still look good.

Yeah, I can imagine it would make the white at the from stand put more too.

Thanks

Agree keep the inner side black.

glad i've inspired someone else and i'll be following to keep up to date ;)

Personally i'd just do the whole rim white.

It makes things a billions times easier and saves you having to mask everything and/or do your very best to avoid overspray.

You'll also never see the insides of the rims once they are fitted and after 2 miles they'll be coated in brake dust and black anyways

I used white primer for my original refurb (as you'll have seen in the thread) and was tempted to stick with it but had already bought the black! :D

I'd do them with white primer and see what you think at that point.

Right stocked up on supplies!

Bought some 60 and 1200 grade sandpaper (already had the stuff in between)

Etching primer

White paint

Spray gun adapter

Sanding block

Masking tape

£30 for the lot not bad!

Just need the alloys now!

They turned up today!

Not bad condition some curbing and scratching but should be able to sand that down. Had a go a sanding the paint and it could take a while!

Bought some nitro morse which should make it a little easier.

Will put some pics up tomorrow.

cant wait to see the pics mate, i just done my spyders in ford graphite grey and they look amazing, personally i think they are the best wheels for the fabia, good luck :D

Well carried on sanding some more, thought it was nice and flat and the dips in the paint were ok to go. So I had a go at painting as I haven't done it before an with this being my practice wheel, I thought what the hell.

Painting went well, it was quite simple and a good learning experience.

The main lesson was that I hadnt sanded enough to get it properly smooth. So back on with sanding tomorrow, bought and electric sander to help out so I should save my fingers.

Also don't use nitro morse on them, as when trying to get some of the paint off it scratches. More lessons learnt!

Tomorrow will tidy up the first wheel and give it another coat of primer then the white and see how it looks.

Pics pre painting below

Update time!

1 wheel down and currently drying. It's not perfect but was a good learner wheel so it can be my spare.

Thank god I got a dremel as its very useful for the little bits.

Costs to date: hate to think but learnt from it all what you exactly need. I'll detail it at the end. Seem to have through a lot of paint, 2 x cans of etch primer (500ml) and 2 x white paint (500ml) and a whole tin of lacquer on on wheel! May be using to much?

Where you getting your paint from?

  • Author

Was halfrauds, but now eBay. Same seller as Pastyboy

Going to say make sure you buy it for a paint supplier much much more in a can... it sounds stupid but its true.

  • Author

Yeah sounds logical.

What should I use to polish them with?

I have some g5 wheel armour to seal, but what to polish?

Thanks

  • Author

Seems logical.

What polishing stuff should I use?

I have some g5 wheel armour to seal them just need some polish first?

Thanks

Are you going to lacquer them?

Given they are white i'd sy they'll need it of no matter how much seal you put onthe the brake dust will eat straight into the paint and you'll have grey wheels in no time

yep.............

  • Author

Yep lacquered them. But I am guessing I don't need to polish them, before I g5 them do I?

Thanks

As you'll have seen from my thread i lacquered mine and then slapped 3 or 4 coats of wax on them and was done with it.

The gold wheels still bead up nicely when i bother to wash them :)

Thanks :)

Update 2 wheels completely finished. 1 wheel pretty much done, just had to do a touch up, which was a pain :(

4th wheel just started priming but not happy with the front as I haven't got it smooth enough so back out with the sandpaper tomorrow.

5th half way through sanding some more finger & mind numbing work to do.

Getting there, just trying not to rush to the finish now. Tyres should turn up tomorrow and hopefully all should be done by next Friday...possibly!
