Two weeks old, Have i got a problem?

Featured Replies

We have had our Octy 1.6 TDi SE for two weeks.

I have noticed that when in 5th gear and accelerating there is a strange noise that can be heard from the engine bay. The noise is sort of a metallic fluttering and only happens in 5th gear and when under acceleration? There is no loss of power or bad running. Its not overly loud but it is there. Have to turn the fan off to get a good listen.

Should i be concerned? Or is there a perfectly normal explanation?

I am loathed to take it to the dealer as i suspect i will get the old "we couldn't hear anything" line if i leave it with them. Never noticed it on the ones i test drove but then again i wasn't listening for it.

Sounds like a loose heat shield, or another loose object.

When I push the clutch pedal in and there is therefore no load on the engine the noise stops. I am worried it could be gearbox related. Don't get the noise in any other gear but 5th. Could it still be just a heat shield?

Hi. I too have just got the same car but mine is a dsg. I have noticed what sounds like a similar noise on acceleration through the gears. Only seems to do it when the car has been on a run and has been stood for a while but is still warm. Its intermittant though and i too am loathe to go back to the dealer. I thought gearbox too but as it doesnt do it all the time i'm not sure. Does yours do it all the time and from cold?

If its only 2 weeks old it will be under warranty so a dealer visit is on the cards. Better to be safe.

Mine does it all the time. And from cold. I had a look underneath yesterday and a good poke around the engine bay but failed to find any loose heat shields or anything else that could be causing it. I am taking it to the dealers later in the week for them to have a listen. I hope this doesn't run into a saga tbh.

Are you able to reject the vehicle if it's not sorted within a set time?

I have had a good search of the net and can't find any reference to gearbox problems associated with this engine so hopefully it won't be anything to serious.

Been back to the dealer today. Service manager came out in the car with me. Said he could hear the noise in question but that to him it sounded like the injectors. I went out in another car of the same spec and engine to mine and it seemed to make the same noise but i think mine is maybe louder. Went in an elegance spec with same engine and could hear it could this be due to better sound insulation????

Anyway what do you guys think? Could it just be the injectors i am listening to? They have also suggested not using supermarket fuel, which we do.

Not sure what else i can do tbh.

Any suggestions?

Was wondering about maybe taking it to a different dealer for a second opinion?

I am sure something similar has been mentioned on 1.8 engines, and it is a flap in the air intake somewhere that resonates. VW issued a service bulletin about it and they replace a small spring somewhere to stop it doing it?

Sorry to be vague, but it may not be the same issue, but it might be worth doing a search of the forum for rattling on 1.8 engines.

Edit - it was 2.0 and is discussed here

Hmmm, an interesting read, not entirely sure it is the same thing as mine only does it in 5th gear.

Does any one know if it is acceptable to take it to another dealer for a second opinion???

I would take it to another dealer if you aren't happy with the first dealer, and also log it with SUK.

When you say log it with SUK. What exactly do you mean? Is it a case of calling customer services and telling them what has happened and that I am going to take it for a second opinion?

Basically, yes. Tell them you don't find the noise/rattle acceptable on a new car and want it investigating and resolving. They should give you a case number or something similar.

Got a case number. Taking it to another dealer on monday. This morning it seemed particularly noisy. But this afternoon seems quieter but not acceptable still. I am seriously gutted. :-(

As a bit of an update. I popped into my local VAG independent garage today to let them have a listen. I used to take my last Octy there once it was out of warranty and my current runabout (1.2 ibiza) has been exclusively serviced by them for years when the mother in law owned it.

Anyway they have had a good listen to the car and they seem to think gearbox. Probably a manufacturing defect. All of they guys at this place are ex VAG techs. One of the guys who went out it my car was working at VW three weeks ago as a master tech.

Not sure how much help this will be in getting my dealer to maybe recognise a problem but the independent said the noise is certainly not normal.

Tried to call the service manager at my local branch but he was "busy". i left a message for him to get back to me but not had anything yet.

I am booked in at another dealer anyway for Monday so will probably see what they have to say before giving my local dealer both barrels.

Hope you get it sorted and without too much hassle.

Todays update.

Went to another dealer.

One of the technicians had a ride and a drive in the car. Said he could hear the noise. Took it into the workshop and an hour later someone comes to tell me that the think they have got to the bottom of it.

They suspect a faulty bearing in the gearbox. Which is something along the lines of what i always suspected. They are seeking authorisation form Skoda UK to strip the gearbox down and replace faulty bearing. They have told me they will call me once they have got the ok from SUK.

Can anyone tell me how long it takes for SUK to authorise this sort of thing?

I am also not sure if i am happy with the gearbox being repaired after only having the car for less than a month. I would prefer a whole new gearbox tbh at the very least. Or am i expecting too much?

Update

Skoda UK have authorised the dealer to take the car in and remove gearbox, strip down and repair. They cant have it for a couple of weeks as they don't have a loan car next week then the week after we are on holiday.

Isn't there any way Skoda UK can supply me with a loan car directly then i could let them have the car sooner for repair?

Anyone done anything similar?

If driving the car wont make it worse I wouldnt worry, If its not safe to drive which I doubt thats the only reason you can reosnably argue for a loaner . Theres I guess a minimal chance the bearing will break up leaving Skoda with a bigger bill but they will have to be the judge of that. If you are likely to do a few thousand miles in the next couple of weeks you could argue that I guess. Its good you have got to the bottom of it . Considering the complexity of a modern car there are few things that go wrong & Skoda I have found to be very good at quickly sorting issues

Legally speaking, it's up to the supplying dealer to repair it, and if you've been told that you can't drive it, then they should be footing the bill for a hire car until they can repair it (as the loss of use would be a consequential damage). As you're going through Skoda and another dealer, it muddies things somewhat. However, there's no harm in asking (if you don't, you won't get it! ;)), especially if you can get away with a small hatchback (i.e. cheap!). :)

The dealer that supplied the car ( Royce Roberts in Hull) have been a joke tbh. The service manager was adamant there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and the noise i could hear was the injectors. Wasn't even interested in taking the car in for further inspection. I contacted Skoda UK who, so far have been excellent. They suggested a second opinion from another dealer which is what i have done. They noticed the issue after a matter of seconds of being in the car. They then spent well over an hour in the workshop with it before coming to the conclusion that something in the gearbox was amiss.

Skoda UK called me today and along with DM keith in York are trying to get the car in sooner ie next week. SkodaUK are going to sort me out with a hire car.

I have to say that SO FAR DM Keith, York and SUK have been excellent. My biggest regret at the moment is that i went to my local and nearest dealer to buy the car. It will be the last time that happens. Spoke to some guys at a local VAG independent and they have all heard bad stuff about Ian Adams, the service manager at Royce Roberts he is a waste of space imho.

Just to add, i have not been told that i can't drive it but i have told SUK that i am off on holiday in just over a weeks time, in the UK admittedly but the car will be getting used quite a bit. Since mentioning this they are now trying to fit the car in earlier than had originally been suggested. So make of that what you will.

Guess they are doing what they should do & helping the customer, cant fault that
