2.0 PD140 vs. 2.0 CR140

Featured Replies

Has anyone experience of both engines?

The wife already has the 2.0 PD140 8V engine in our Octavia Scout and when I get to drive it I love it.

It's plenty powerful enough, silky smooth and so easy to drive smoothly.

I've had a few issues with my 2.0 PD170 vRS of late, I love the power but ever since the injectors were changed under a recall it's had all sorts of niggles (poor starting, two failed turbo's, rising oil levels, EML light, and now the repeated showing of the DPF light). Jumping into the Scout is a breath of fresh air.

I am therefore at a crossroads. Either I go a DPF delete and hope this will cure everything or chop it in for a nearly new 2.0 CR140 (the actual car it will be attached to is undecided!).

I've read all of the PD vs. CR threads (and contributed to a few!) so am aware of the puncy power delivery of the PD vs. the smoother more linear power delivery of the CR.

Is the 2.0 CR engine likely to please me as much as the PD!?

Hummm, not sure how much use it is to you, but a friend has gone PD130 Fabia vRS > 1.4 TSI Fabia vRS > Octavia vRS 2.0 CR. He says he has missed having a diesel and after the test drive described it as driving like his Fabia use to. Part of it could be because he has had a revvy petrol for a year or so, but he says it feels very similar to his Fabia nice and punchy. I`m looking forward to having a go to see what it drives like as many of the comments on here made me think it`d drive like a petrol.

Thanks Matt, the Octavia 2.0 CR140's are still too expensive for me but there is a Seat Altea 2.0 CR140 near me which I understand to be very similar to the Octavia so will try and get a drive this week!

An Altea is a bit of a change from a vRS.

I thought the CR was a lovely engine, far more refined than the PD engine, it just wasn't quick enough for my liking even when remapped.

You really need to drive one, if you love the PD as much as you say you do then I imagine you will feel a little underwhelmed with the CR.

A remap would help to give it some of the PD characteristics and make it feel a bit better.

 Andy, I am with you all the way, I keep hearing so many good things about the 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engines fitted to the Octavia it's hard to ignore.

The big stumbling block for me is my mileage, at 25,000 a year it still makes a petrol the more expensive choice.

Agreed, the argument for diesel is become weaker, what with the expense of diesel fuel and the advancement of petrol engine efficiency but my mileage still says I'm better off with diesel.

Luckily I've never driven a petrol vRS, I think if I had then I'd have bought one already!!

Yes, the Altea is light years away from the vRS.

If the vRS has a desirability rating of 10 then the Altea has to be a 2 or 3!

But, the heart ruled the head when I purchased the vRS, this time I'm trying to not let that happen, but maybe an Altea is too far the other way!?

As Gizmo says, a test drive is a must, I might even try the 1.6 CR105 too :bandit:

I'm only 20 miles away, you could have a go in mine if you like. I'm in York Wendsday Afternoon

Go on " You know it makes sense  "

A remap on the CR will not give it some of the charactaristics of a PD. It will provide more power and torque in the same existing linear way the standard CR does.

The fact that I owned a PD and now drive a mapped 170CR and a std 170CR every week means I am wrong then

The std car is very flat (linear if you like) whereas the mapped car is not, granted it does not quite have the shove a PD gives you, but it is about halfway between the two.

I've not driven the CR140 but do have the PD140, The PD140 16v feels smooth to me and with a Shark remap its even smoother with the power delivery although the PD Grunt is still there and over 1yr later I've not had any issues with clutch/turbo etc etc (and no DPF to worry about)

If you are looking at £14,000 for a08 plate Scout( your other thread) That sort of money pays for a hell of a lot of petrol !! Get a slightly newer one than yours and the price to change will be not much more certainly not £7000

I owned a CR and had it remapped and have driven plenty of PD170s. I disagree that the standard CR is flat. Its power delivery is typical of modern diesel engines, the PD is the anomaly with the huge wadge of torque low down and then nothing. A remapped CR (assuming decent map) does not give you this, it gives improved linear power delivery through to the red line i.e. More torque/power over standard. The fundamental characataristic of the CRs linear power delivery is not affected by a remap.

A remapped PD can however provide more linear power delivery, depending on the map and what you want.

Petrol FTW.

I think of it this way... petrol is only going to get more expensive to make the most of it whilst you still can!

Hmmm, a petrol vRS?

25,000 miles a year at 35mpg vs. 50mpg...

To heck with it, the FL is worth it just for it's LED DRL's B)

We've got a 60 Seat Exeo sport cr143 as our family car can't fault it on 15000 now just starting to.notice it loosening up abit

Haven't had 1 problem so far.
