How do I get this out? Snapped bolt

Featured Replies

On Friday I picked up an uprated gearbox for my Mk1 VRS from "Flybikeslee". When i got home and had a good look at it i realised it slipped his mind to tell me about the snapped bolt in the top mount! :-( looks well in there, any ideas on how im best to remove the remains? Thanks

thread the sheared bolt down the centre with a left handed thread??? instert a lefty screw or something and as you tighten it will losen the bolt?

drill it out, then retap the thread, or use an easy out tool, you drill a hole in the sheared bolt, then a reverse thread locks the easyout in and you can 'in theory' remove the bolt.

I looked at the easy outs but just worried if i snap that in there its well nakered then. Would it be worth heating it up a little whilst doing it? Think i will keep putting WD40 in the hole and let it soak in for a few days before i try anything

could maybe try heating the area around and the metal might expand enough to wack it out??

Is it alloy? Wouldn't risk heating it up if it is

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

Message him and ask. His friend has a garage so may have the tools. Always been helpful

As said drill it and use easy out tool.

Take back to seller and get him to do it !!!!

These are stretch bolts and should be replaced with new ones when you refit ;-)

Wouldn't be something I would forget to mention when selling something

Looks like easy out it is. I would take it back but im 2hrs away so probs not worth it. I guess they wernt replaced when the gearbox was refit in his car, or it has been cross threaded  . It wouldnt forget to mention it either but im too honest! No reply to my text suprisingly

Sorry to see its going to be a right mare :( those bolts take more than an easy outs if they are stretched to the the right torque .... My plan of action would be to centre punch the middle of the bolt then drill 3mm upwards keeping the drill square then continue up the drill bit sizes without cutting into the mounting then with a small chisel/ screwdriver break the remaining part of the bolt up and re tap the hole some heat wouldent hurt the box or the casting as it gets hotter than you will make it with a blow torch ....

hope this helps

As said above that will be a drill out job as it looks quiet well jammed in,

There is specialised that can do it as i had my peugeot mi16 block done a few years back and that was 3in into block, had 3 bolts drilled out and think it cost me 100 quid.

If your handy with a drill have a go as at least you can see it but take your time

I think that is best option too. Drill it through centre and keep using a larger drill bit each time up to the point you do not want to risk damaging thread. Then tap the remaining bolt metal out to centre slowly going around the bolt until in caves in. Have done this few times before and with good results. I got away without needing to re tap.

Why not take the bracket off the box? And use the one off yours? Or is the gearbox one all one part unlike the engine side?

Think it was a blessing i didnt get the turbo off him.

am sure was an honest mistake lee is a nice guy!

Sounds like im best drilling and trying to remove remains by picking it out.

Lee seemed a nice honest guy but cant be that honest if he didnt reply to my txt!! Wondered why he offered to lift it into my car!!!

Think the bracket is part of the gearbox buddy, unless it is the top section mount that could be swapped.

Personally, I'd attempt to grind a flat in the middle of the bolt, and use an impact driver. Fiddly, but do-able. And a little bit of heat sure as hell won't hurt anything, but don't go mad. Acetylene torch for instance may just be a wee bit OTT.

Just remove je bracket mate!

3 or 4 bolts it looks like hold it on. Ill check etka later too but for ease just swap the brackets.

I have just been out to mine and looked. It is a seporate mounting.

That bracket is held on with three 16mm bolts. Just take it off and use yours like Billy says.

He probably didn't mention it as there is a blindingly obvious simple solution to the problem.
