steering controller, help?!

Featured Replies

Wanting to retro fit cruise control to my vRS, i thought it was a straight forward swap of stalks, put in loom and a couple of codes but apparently if i dont have the right steering controller this will need to be changed aswell

Where am i looking? The seller has given me a list of part numbers that will correspond to whatever part i have then i will know if i have a 'low line, mid line or high line' controller, enabling me to put the cruise control straight in

Iv been told its on the lower trim but this is abit vague! I guessing its near the steering column?

Can you not just scan with VCDS?

It would be the first vRS I'd have done that didn't have the right controller. Is it not working then?

It's under the steering column under the trim.

Remove steering wheel, top trim, bottom trim and the slip ring to be able to get it off.

Scan with VCDS to get the part number as well as the HW & SW. I had a 'BC' suffix controller which is midline but, according to Ross Tech won't support CC. It seems that HW 035 & HW 036 will, but later HW ones won't.

I made a post on steering controller coding advice in the VCDS section and there are more details in there.

I also have two steering controllers for sale (don't ask). One midline (supports trip computer & CC. - my current 'BC' controller) & one high line (trip, CC & MFSW - an 'AM' controller).

Check the list on Ross Tech to see which slip ring type you have and choose a controller with the same type (or change the slip ring, but I wimped out if that option).

PM'd you Mike

It has not yet been fitted, the seller has offered to fit it for me but wanted to make sure it would be straight forward so no time was wasted

Id be surprised if the vRS did not come with the capability for CC like.

Out of the many many Octavia vRS I have done of all kind of spec they have all had the right controller.

However one thing I have found if you don't disconnect the battery to remove the airbag the battery will need to be disconnected anyhow before the CC will work, kinda needs a hard boot to see everything even if it is coded.

Right after reading through my scan and discussing it with the seller (whom works for VW) It turns out mine does NOT support CC but might be able to coded around this.

1K0-953-549-BC Type 2 SW 0070 Midline Yes - #1

This is the list of codes given to correspond with with slip ring around the column so it is a mid line module but the #1 note points out it does not support CC

But apparently it can be coded to work

Typical :(

According to my listings from Skoda and the list on Ross tech the BC midline controller is suitable for cruise control.

Yes it will work.

Update for those with BC Controller's;

After Fitting Cruise to Emma's VRS today, the BC 035 refused to work with Cruise & showed Cruise Blocked on the Engine ECU Measuring Blocks, after fitting a Highline BK & swapping back the BC, it seemed to fool the ECU & removed the block.

So far; HW 035 & 036 OK, 638 & 636 need replacing

So far; HW 035 & 036 OK, 638 & 636 need replacing

That's what Eddie_NL told me and I told you!

Did you code the BC controller and the engine controller before trying the other module?

According to my listings from Skoda and the list on Ross tech the BC midline controller is suitable for cruise control.

I not usually one to disagree with an expert, but Ross Tech clearly shows a note #1 that states BC is not suitable for CC as Emma stated earlier.

This was the reason I delayed fitting CC for nearly a year until I got confirmation from Eddie_NL. (And the guts to do it myself).

Correct, I missed the note. Still says replacement not required on my Skoda paperwork though.

I think the Ross Tech site should say that some later versions of the BC controller won't accept CC.

Is there a SW update that Skoda dealers can apply to the BC controllers to get the all working?

We can update them if there is one available, depends on Skoda.

Thanks for your help yesterday TKpeters. The CC was rather an after thought and i was not desperate for it so i pleasantly surprised when it worked, eventually!

This is going to help in more ways then i had realised, on the way home last night i set the CC for 60mph as i knew i needed to save the fuel. The A171 moor road is not like a mountain pass but its hilly enough but when i got home the car said it had returned 54.6mpg! :) also taking away the urge to boot it :p which is surprising as it cannot read the road so places it was slowing down i would of been speeding back up again to go up the hill.

Im guessing the slowing down part of it is controlled by the fueling? Just curious.
