Desperate for some help please (pic included)

Featured Replies

Been having a right chew on today, front wipers packed up so I bought a brand new motor from skoda dealer.

Fitted it and they still wont work, have checked the fuse in engine bay to make sure it hadn't blown when changing motor.

All i can think now is that it must be one of the relays located behind the dash on drivers side, I have removed the dash cover but can not find anywhere and any way of working out which one controls the front wipers.

If anyone can tell from this pic, it would be appreciated.

Or if you have any other ideas as to why the new motor isn't working please suggest them.

Thanks

Hi John

Most likely to be a fuse, but its not a obvious one, check them all

Radiotwo.

ps one other thing, make sure the linkages are not sized as that's quite common

Does the car think the bonnet is open? If it does, for example if the bonnet catch isn't closing properly, it will prevent the wipers from working.

Thanks mate, I have checked every single fuse with a fuse checker and all are ok.

How exactly do I check the linkages, cos everything seems to be free when I move it by hand.

Thanks

I had thought this after lots of hours scratching my head lol, but if this was the case wouldn't the light on the dash that shows the bonnet open be illuminated?

Have you checked the fuses, against the manual's fuse location page?

Can't remember if the wipers are controlled via a fuse inside the passenger cabin, or from one under the bonnet.

UPDATE: It's in the engine compartment. F31 Front window wiper 30A rating

Yeah I checked that one, and even replaced it just for the sake of it just in case :-(

It's fuse 19 on mine, but yeah the 30amp one

Yes it would be.

Could it be the wiper stalk?

They have been known to play-up, especially the indicator stalk...

I will change the wiper stalk tomorrow as well, but does anyone at all know which relay it is?

Cos if I change the stalk and that's not it then it just can't be anything else

Do the wipers use a relay on the Octavia?

The intermittent fuction on models without rain sensing wipers is controlled electronically not using a relay as on older cars...

Can you hear the motor trying to move the wipers, if you can its most probably a broken linkage.

Before you change the wiper stalk - it will throw a fault code if it's defective. Worth having the fault codes read first?

Have you checked F31 as well? Yours will have the same fuse layout as mine.

And as said, get a diagnostic scan done too - that will help narrow things down. Where are you based?

Cheers lads, there is no codes coming up so does that 100% rule out the stalk?

I dont have a fuse 31, it goes upto 30 under the bonnet, and then 31 is blank in the fuse compartment at the side of the dash.

I have also tried swapping the relays marked with 460 on the top round to see if that was the problem, but the wipers still wont move :-(

I will search for Andyvee, and drop him a pm thanks.

I am based in Peterlee, (Durham/Hartlepool) area

Hahahahaha, I've finally fixed it :whew:

Took every single relay out this morning, stalk, wiper motor, fuses, everything.

Double checked connections and cleaned everything, and re-fitted.

It only bloody works!!

I'm so over the moon

Shame its a sunny day today and I cant get to use them

Well done, Pop down to Winchester, its wet

Glad you're sorted. Must have been a loose connection then.

As said, get someone local to run a VCDS scan for you, as it's very likely that whatever has caused the fault will have triggered a fault code. It'll at least help you know what originally caused the problem.

The old motor was definitely dead, I connected a 12v feed to it and it wouldn't budge.

But yeah it must have also caused something else to trip when it died.

All that matters now though is it all works again :-)

I see John has solved his problem now but this may help others; My symptoms, front wipers not working, washer not pumping, alarm not working, rear wiper not activating when going into reverse (with front wiper in on position) but, working when operated directly from stalk, indicators not flashing to indicate central locking working- though locks engaged. Maxidot indicating bonnet open - though it was closed.

Fault is defective micro switch on bonnet locking mech. Cured temporarily by disconnecting feed to switch on top of radiator at connector, the switch is open circuit when the bonnet is closed, luckily. It seems you cant buy the microswitch on its own but have to buy a complete bonnet lock!! Hope this helps someone.
