Turbo upgrade routes - intermediate options?

Featured Replies

OK, if i were to replace my turbo, and decided to go Hybrid PD130 and have 200hp in mind how could i go about it? Please bare in mind i need my car as a daily driver!

If i changed the turbo to a pd130 hybrid, would it run ok on a stage 1 mapped car? Any difference going to be noticed, or would it just be that it CAN handle that extra power when it comes to it?

Reason behind the question is that (as per my previous posts) my Turbo MAY be on its way out, and would need changing soon if it is. So id prefer to get the hybrid and then run that while im saving for a clutch upgrade and collecting parts for the intercooler upgrade.

If it will be a bit of a pain, i'll probably just upgrade to the stronger Garrett PD130 unit and stick with that. What are the difference between hybrid turbos and normal? Just bearing upgrades?

Advice would be great with price and where to source the options also (with NO trade in turbo as no one wants a KKK!)

Maybe we can create a 'turbo upgrade' options sticky post so this doesn't have to be visited many times! (Im happy to do a write up if we can get all the info together)

Thanks,

Mike

Hi buddy

I would 100% recommended going the garrett route, as said the kkk are a poor turbo :(

I would recommend getting a remap once the turbo fitted, you should be ok to run close to 200ish on a standard clutch but it will kill the dual mass Over time,170 is more of a safe target on standard clutch in my opion. When we have a turbo made to hybrid spec we have,

Uprated compressor wheel, bearings, collars, seals, o rings etc replaced with a wide contact journal bearings, large pad 360 degree thrust bearing and collars, all the seal tolerances checking and machining as required, chemical and shot blast cleaning, and high speed VSR balancing. I have a picture of one if you wish to see one?

Hope this answers your question?

Thanks - Basically its just uprated bearings then? Nothing changes with how the air flows or anything like that, so it should run the same as a normal PD130/150?

Will the car run OK with a stage 1 remap with this hybrid turbo bolted on afterwards as a daily driver? What differences would there be?

As said, it'll be a few months before the parts are on ready for the re-remap!

No sorry buddy it had a uprated intake impeller

You will be ok to run it for a while and get your remap next month, I'm sure plenty of people have done this on here and can help out with there opion buddy :)

OK, thats great, so looking on Turbo Dynamics they have Hybrid PD130's for around £900 all in.

They also have the PD150, standard Garrett for £550 http://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/shop/7210215006s-new-genuine-turbocharger-for-vag-19tdi-150bhp-p-2283.html

What would the options be on the PD150? That's just a slightly increased impeller over the PD130 right? What could i expect from a standard Garrett PD150? (with better clutch and intercooler)

Are price inc vat if we have a core unit in we usual pay £150 for a good pd130 core so it's £700 all in but I'm sold out of cores at the min.

You are correct about the pd150 turbos. with a hybrid you should max the injectors out at around 230ish depending on other mods then it's bigger injector nossles. I'm sure others will be able to help out on more information :) But any other questions fire away :)

No issues running a larger/stronger turbo on a stock or mapped car for a while, obviously you`ll not gain any power until you do though. I, in the past have run a smooth 200bhp map on a uprated clutch and stock 130,000 mile DMF, no issues. People have run 200bhp on a totally stock clutch setup in the past too, so not just me. You could run a little more power than that as long as you dont drive it like a tool and the DMF is in decent condition.

I ran 220bhp and ~300ft/lbs on a standard clutch and fly with no issues, its largely down to driving style and how smooth the torque curve is! It's the torque that'll murder the clutch.
