Urban 170 4x4

Featured Replies

Before I bought my Yeti (a CR170 4x4) I tried the Octy CR170 VRS against the Yeti CR140 4x4 - while the Octavia had the advantage once it was into third gear, below that the Yeti could put all the power down and turn at the same time - the Octy was constantly scrabbling. I'm inclined to think that within the limits of the law and on the public road the Yeti CR170 probably covers ground faster.

Coincidentally, I tried a Superb CR170 4x4 today, and while it corners a bit flatter I again think the Yeti is actually quicker up to UK legal limits. Certainly it feels more chuckable around corners.

A few weeks ago I took my Leon cupra to awesome gti to have an apr map put on it, (. 350 bhp!!! ) while I was waiting, I spoke to the guys there and they were talking about a yeti 1.8 tsi with a ko4 turbo conversion with an apr map taking it up to 300 bhp with up rated anti roll bars, etc. Now that would be interesting!!!!!!!!!

That sounds like something I'd consider doing to mine. :-)

Having had two 170CR vRS models prior to the Yeti 170 I have to say the Octavias felt faster and as would be expected more agile, however I THINK the gearing on the Yeti must be lower as it is happier at lower speeds in 6th gear solo and 6th is much more useable when caravanning.

I do miss the sporty element of the vRS but the Yeti is a better everyday car as the ride is better, it is shorter to park, you can see more of what is happening on the road and speed bumps/flooded roads are less of an issue ... importantly for me anyway is the Yeti has the edge for towing too.

However if the next generation Octy vRS comes with 4x4 then that is where my money will go!

OK - some facts. Clearly, both cars have the same horsepower. However, the Octavia weighs in at 1415Kgs while the Yeti scales 1460Kgs. The Yeti's 4wd may explain why it can equal the Octavia's 8,1 secs acceleration to 60, but the extra weight (and the aerodynamics) probably explain why the Octavia will go on to 139 mph while the yeti can only hit 125 mph. I ought to make the disclaimer that these are official figures - I have no idea if they are true.

My gut feeling is that on a race track, the Octavia will be quicker, at least in dry conditions. The lower centre of gravity and higher top speed should be sufficient to beat the Yeti. On a rallycross track the Yeti will win. On the road, both will be great fun to drive - but the Yeti is infinitely cooler

Mind you - there is only one way to find out -

FIGHT!!!!

I just about kept up with a 170 Vrs on a track day in my 140dsg yeti. The 4x4 helped a lot even in the dry but high COG conspired against me.
