Varible/fixed 5/40 oil confusion....

Featured Replies

My pd vrs has just flagged up it wants a service in 800 miles...

As far as I know I'm on varible, so I cannot understand why its flagged up so early as it was only done 9 months and 11k ago.

Am also worried about the oil that's in the engine as I was given a can of quantum 5/40 oil to top up.

I haven't had to top up any oil for the last 10k or 9 months as I had the injector recall done a week before the service so my oil level has been above max since...but that's another story...lol !

My only worry is...is 5/40 oil the right oil for my vrs ? Have read somewhere it should be 5/30 ?

If it has got 5/40 oil in, is this why it has flagged up a service early ?

Is 5/40 longlife oil ? I know its a thicker oil so does that offer better protection for the engine and DPF ?

hi pal

do you have the 2.0 TDI DPF VRS BMN engine?

if so the oil used should have been 1 Ltr 5W-30 Fully Synth VW 504 00, 507 00 ACAE C3 part number ZGB115QLB00500. 10/40 wont be longlife and had the service light been set incorrectly to fixed, the service light would have come on at 10k or 12months *whichever comes first.

you want the right oil for variable which is 5/30 longlife

Yes mate, its the BMN engine with DPF..

So I need to get it serviced within 800 miles ? I normally have it all done with my mot which is due at Xmas.

I thought that it might have flagged up a serrvice because 5/40 oil is for fixed as it the oil is not longlife and not because my car has not been set to fixed incorrectly if you understand what I mean !

The importance is that it's the correct VAG standard. Check Opie Oils website and it'll tell you what you need.

Most (in my experience) end up using the VAG 507.00 standard which is compatible with variable servicing, even if they're on fixed intervals.

It makes no difference whether the car is set to fixed or variable servicing.

The PD170 requires the longlife VW 507.00 oil regardless of which service interval you are on as it has a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

VW 507.00 oil is 5W30.

If you are running Quantum 5W40 then this is to VW 505.00 spec which is not the longlife / low ash oil your car needs.

I very much hope that it wasn't a Skoda dealer that filled your car with 5W40!
