1.4 mpi engine swap

Featured Replies

Hi, my MK1 2000 model ATZ engine code Fabia 8 valve died recently due to head gasket failure, which in itself is not too bad,it's just that it got so hot the oil started to boil so I am not sure whether the bottom end is damaged also.

In light of this I was thinking of replacing the engine with a lower mileage used item. I am not sure about the compatibility of some of the ones I have seen for sale as they

appear to look the same as mine but have different engine codes such as AQW or AME.

I am assuming if I used my original throttle body & transferred it over to the replacement unit all would be well, or is there

anything else that should be done.

Better still does anyone think I might be lucky & get away with just a head gasket.

According to the Skoda engine Workshop manual I have, the engines AQW and ATZ are technically (on paper at least) the same, except AQW incorporated EU-3-DDK/EU-4 emission regs whereas ATZ only covered the D4 emissions standard

This was because ATZ was produced between 01/11/1999 & 31/07/2000 and AQW was produced between 01/08/2000 & 31/03/2003.

So long story short, i dont think many of the parts are different.

Thanks for the info. Would I be right in assuming I could get away with an AQW providing

I used my original ecu/throttle body set up. I'm guessing that if I didn't then the the car wouldn't

run correctly because of the difference in the way mine & the later ones are programmed.

Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
