Problems with restarting felicia

Featured Replies

Hi

Have a 98 1.3mpi pickup owned from new, now 68000 miles.

Have a problem with it not restarting after switching off. It always starts ok from cold but if you turn it off then try to restart it very rarely will restart unless you leave it for at least 30 mins and not always then. Having researched topics have checked out temp sensor - all ok - have found that if I disconnect map sensor car starts, restarts and runs with only an odd idling problem - changed the map sensor and still have the problem. On occasions when it does restart runs very poorly as if on two cylinders - switch off, disconnect map and it starts perfectly! About the only thing I can think of now is the ECU? Coil pack is new as there was a fault on that for last mot.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Peter

Forgot to mention have also changed throttle body

I'm thinking read fault codes to confirm this, but the problem is probably either the MAP sensor or the engine temperature sensor.

When you change the throttle body on a 1.3 MPI, you always have to reset you ECU. When that's not done, problems sometimes remain.

Cable-Throttle Engines

(These are engines with a physical cable between the accelerator and the throttle, but WITHOUT an ISV.)

Turn the key on but do not start the car.

  • [select]
  • [01 - Engine]
  • [Measuring Blocks - 08]

Enter Group 098 (Note: Some SIMOS or Marelli ECU's use Group 001 such as ADY & AEE engines)

  • [Go!]
  • [switch to basic settings]

Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds.

  • Click the [switch to Meas. Blocks] button and you're all set.

Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!

^ As bone collector really & then work from there in respect of sensors etc

Had similar hot start problem many years ago on my then V6 Capri but that turned out to be an incorrectly rated battery fitted by the previous owner!

tell us how the problem started.

was it all of a sudden?

was it related to other events?

any error codes?

other engine malfunctions?

as a rule of thumb, you never throw parts at car unless you have the evidence.

Thanks Bone collector, will try resetting ecu tomorrow.

Thanks guys for the responses and suggestions.

To clarify it has new map sensor and I checked out temperature resistances as per instructions I found in a post on this forum. No error codes showed up. Finding it starts without problems with the map sensor disconnected was evidence to me that it may well have been the problem. The throttle body has been mentioned a lot on this forum as being a common source of problems - I bought one for very little money and given increasing shortage of spares availability happy to put it on the shelf if mine isn't faulty yet!

Fault started some time ago but only very rarely and would start again after a bit of cranking and switching on/off ignition but now has got to stage it happens every time after I switch off even if engine has only run for a few seconds and just will not restart until left for quite a time. However as I mentioned if I open the bonnet and disconnect the map sensor it always then starts and restarts no problem put the connector back on the map sensor and it plays up again. Perhaps I'll fit a switch so I can isolate it as required - lol !!! Doubtless running with map sensor disconnected will do emissions no good.

No other events or engine malfunctions and the only error code I ever have had was a lambda one when I first looked at error codes - cleared and never shown up since.

I suggest one more test, it can't hurt.

have a friend help you hook jump start cables to his battery, then put him start his engine and rev it a bit, then see if your car still has that issue.

of course resetting ECU prior is a must.

Hi Sorry but have been busy with other work and haven't had time to do much on the Felicia until today. Have registered my software so I can try to reset the throttle body as above but no joy. Keep getting a 'Label File: Redir fail!' error message on the 01 engine controller. The immobiliser controller redirects ok to a label file just the engine one that is a problem. Extremely annoying that the software doesn't seem to work properly and beginning to think I've just wasted best part of £70!. Luckily I have my other pickup so my work is not affected.

Have checked instructions and video on how to do TBA and all seems in order.

Could it be an ECU fault causing it? Seems unlikely to me as can't see why software wouldn't find the file unless ECU isn't sending the info??

Have checked that there are no fault codes and battery voltage is ok.

Just to help anyone else with a similar problem VCSD will NOT do a TBA on this engine/ECU. Apparently neither will VAS. That is official from RossTech support. Apparently there is a Czech language piece of software which is supposed to do it but it is unofficial and my czech is non-existant.

Can anyone else suggest how to do a TBA on this engine? I have heard lots of stories of leaving the battery disconnected for hours but does this ACTUALLY work? I have FINALLY got round to getting a throttle body gasket so am going to clean the TB and replace the gasket this weekend as I've had the same problem as petercb on and off for the last 2 years I've owned the car

^ Each time I've unhooked the ecu for 1 hr + and then turned the ignition to on for around 20-30 secs before actually firing up. My, now retired, Skoda guy endorsed this approach but tbh I'm labouring under the assumption it worked?? Others will advise a more technically correct approach

As my previous post you CANNOT do a TBA on the Simos 2p and there is no factory procedure to do it. DO NOT BUY VCDS OR VCDS LITE they cannot do a TBA and neither can the factory programme VAS see the thread on this link. You will waste your money and they WILL NOT REFUND YOUR PAYMENT.

I haven't got around to trying the czech software yet but hopefully will have a go in the next day or so.

Disconnecting the battery does not in my experience reset the ECU on 1.3 mpi engines, I have had the battery literally disconnected for weeks with no effect. It may work on other engines or the earlier single point injection but as i say doesn't work for me.

Czech software is at

http://www.motordiag.eu/msm/index.php

Hope that helps, perhaps the mods will pin this topic and/or the other one for others to benefit from.

Just an update - after using the Czech free software it reset all the eeprom on the ECU, sadly it made not the slightest difference to my problem. It even at the end of the programme tells you to carry out a throttle body adaptation using VCDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This of course is exactly what you can't do with this setup. Feel free to try it on your system it may cure your fault and didn't make it any worse on mine.

Connect up interface, run factory reset, remove fuse no1 (extreme left pink 10A) then press continue, turn off ignition and replace fuse and press continue. Any problems blame google translation not me!!!

As for me have bought another ECU (very cheap from working car) which I will try and see what happens, if that doesn't fix it then it's Ebay time for the vehicle.
