track car!

Featured Replies

decided to buy myself a dedicated track car, as im currently running my octavia and a shogun and its getting expensive. ive been trying to sell my octavia for ages and keep getting stupid cash offers or people want to swap it for a saxo or some crap.

just wondering if anyones stripped one out and what it was like?

at the minute thinking either my octy, an impreza, or a gti6. open to suggestions i just need cheap and fast.

was vaguely considering a corsa v6 conversion, just on the basis that it would fit on a smaller trailer.

what do people think/suggest?

vrs is not a good track car imo

something like a gti6 or along those lines is ideal

I'm building a 309Gti to use as a track car with a Mi16 lump in it,

What about a clio 172 if you fancy something abit smaller than a GTi6 as they are a hoot to drive especially in cup form

I've done a trackday in vrs and it was hopeless, spent most of day with smoke coming off front tyres even trying to be gentle with throttle

A gti6 is one of the best out of the box handling hot hatches of all time end of!!!! I miss mine!!

However a friend of mine is selling a golf gti mk3 for £200 in which I have put a ad in the forsale section.

Even if freedom, not allowed to sell items you don't have legal title to. ;)

Agree with all the above. I think a smaller hot hatch needed to base a dedicated track car around.

I did not know this sorry!

think gti6 is winning at the moment, theres acouple on ebay for about £800ish and to be fair it would be a shame to strip out the octy, someone will buy it sooner or later and will get a good car.

i like the clio sports aswell but the gti6 can be got a lot cheaper

I have a Corsa B Gsi All original, goes well, and can drive it on 3 wheels at 70 no worries round a corner.

great little go kart.

I had a corsa b 1.4 16v sport,

i used to thrash the hell out of it, not known for been the best handling cars but still good fun altho bigger brakes are a must on them

whats wrong with a saxo if you want a track car??

She is 1.6 16v can out handle a new corsa vxr. She took me to 7th at handling circuit one year @ USC, on first attempt of 3. I was sub 1 minute and only person all weekend to be sub 1 minute at first attempt, they even used my car on promotion material following year. B)

Octi can't be that bad for a track car lot of guys run mk4 gti and get on well with them?

Lsd in an Octi is prob a must have if its to be a track car and that's expensive though.

Sham cause I always wanted to see a vrs track car..

The vrs has an extra 2ft hanging over rear end and at 1550kg is quiet a heavy beast aswell,

I would imagine a 4wd one with a set of brembos up front would fair better as it would be able to get power down better

i just hate them to be honest

1550kgs? Book weights around 1345Kg,less then a Cupra r and Audi s3 bit more then a golf gti

what about a mk2 golf?

or

my mate is selling a sweet group b fiesta rs1800 track car....its epic on the track and would cost a fortune to build a normal car to this spec

its all abought lightness

i just hate them to be honest

ever drove one in anger theyre great fun

if not then a 106 gti is the same cheap thing underneath

I remember trevor33 had his vrs on weigh bridge after taking some scrap in and it was just over 1500kg

Being in Swindon it didn't stand a chance really...

Perfect example of how to ruin a Gti-6

Even the handbrake in chrome makes me want to throw up

Definitely go for lightness, will be easier on brakes and tyres. I'd also go for something with a normally aspirated engine, better throttle response and should be less to go wrong.

So I would put an octy or an Impreza well out of the equasion. I'd be looking at the following:

Pug 106/306 GTI

Pug 205 GTI (and there are some about which have had 306 GTI/Xsara VTS engine swaps!)

Honda Civic/CRX

Nissan Almera GTI

MG ZR 160 / ZS 180

that gti6 looks like it has a double chin. almera gti not a bad shout, i used to have an sri when i was younger and loved it

thing i like about imprezas is there are plenty of modified ones about with decent power, and obviously cheap as chips being modified, also shed loads of uprated parts available for peanuts. not sure what they weigh in at compared to a gti6. will look later (if i remember/can be arsed)
