track car!

Featured Replies

I used to have a 306 GTi-6, best handling car i've owned. Sounds lovely when on song too. Not bad with 167 bhp on tap either. Only thing you need to watch out for is "tappers"

almera gti not a bad shout, i used to have an sri when i was younger and loved it

I had one for about 3 months, it hadn't been looked after very well before I bought it but it never burned a drop of oil and the engine was great! If you're tall the driving position is pants though and a lot of them are quite rusty now.

thing i like about imprezas is there are plenty of modified ones about with decent power, and obviously cheap as chips being modified, also shed loads of uprated parts available for peanuts. not sure what they weigh in at compared to a gti6. will look later (if i remember/can be arsed)

Probably around 1400kg+. It'll cost much more to run than a FWD hot hatch! It may be quicker (before it blows up) but I think one of the cars I listed would actually be more fun.

Mate of mine drives in the time attack currently runs a crazy Porsche but has run an evo, imprezza, seat Leon etc and started off in a gti6 and said its the most fun he's ever had.

When I was looking at track cars before getting into drifting he told me without a doubt to get a gti6!

Check his fb out, I'm sure there's pics of it in there somewhere

i like the fact hes sponsored by sims metal management. they should sponsor me the amount of scrap i used to take in there

id still look at a little fwd french thing

my saxo has shown a lot of cars up on track its not about power its about how it handles and sticky rubber (used cheap off ebay) and some decent suspension (cheap off a guy who races) and itll outrun things like silvia s14s on a circuit like mallory park with only 100hp (got a video of that too haha!)

makes me really want to get my 106 done so i can see what one goes like with over 220bhp/tonnein all honesty though i wouldnt bother with subarus ect if it breaks it wont be as cheapwhats a wrx motor fetch these days?a 106 you can fit a later 207/308 ect motor in if it goes bang and they can be picked up low mileage for about 2-300 quid and quite literally bolt in apart from 3 holes that need drilling so you can rag it and not worry about if it goes pop if something fails and if you stuff it you can find a shell on owners clubs for under 100 quid

I used to have a vtr and it was the worse thing I'd ever driven/owned!

To be comfortable in one of those you need a shoe size 5 and be under 5' tall

Clio 172's are meant to be pretty nimble on track.

Do you have a max budget, rear wheel drive of some sort might be a more rewarding drive. Also for the fwd list, add the 1.7l ford puma. Cheap, lightweight, good handling out of the box, plenty of spares, though you'll struggle to get more than 150 horses and stock brakes are crap!

172s are fun my mate had one but hes recently gone back to a 196 for the fun factor (mind his 106 is a fully track ready car from a pretty much standard 172)

im 6ft and size 9 i dont struggle in my saxo at all i dont see why people complain about it tbh

ive got different seats in mine now but the standard arent that badly positioned on track a bucket is a very good mod so that solves if you do think theyre cramped

i think the octi is better as fast road car. previously i had a stripped gti-6 and a stripped corsa c20xe and a 300bhp astra, the gti-6 would destroy everything i have owned on a track perfect handling right out of the box and cheap as chips now as i sold mine for 800 and it still had a lot more life in it, would buy another one for a track car if i had the money. and a 3k supercharger will put you ahead of pretty much anything out there.

i had a saxo vtr aswell, was good but serioulsy underpowered needs a 16v engine.

i think the octi is a bit wollowy for track work although mine is standard and badly in need of bushes.

mate had a clio 172 and it was decent but nothing special (imho)

i agree the 16v vts and 106gti with more grunt is fun but lack of power in my vtr makes me have to try harder haha

ive got a 106 rallye gearbox so better ratios the vtr box is useless again though lack of power

budget is up to £1000, preferably less as its going to be abused

aim about 800 for a car then and save the 200 for brakes

rc5+ up front and decent fluid youll never have problems nothing worse than getting to a trackday doing 3 or 4 laps then needing half hour for the brakes to cool and work again
