honest opinions...S4 or VRs?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Ive currently got a 2007my Octavia VRs Saloon 2litre petrol and as of this week ive found out im gonna be a dad too!

i know the octavia is spacious and comfy and with the REVO map fast and economical but before i found out about Stu junior on the way i was looking at Audi S4 Avants (03-05 4.2 V8), i work for audi as well which means parts and labour are always gonna be cheap.

but what would you do?

Keep the octavia or go for the avant and be pimpy?

thansk all

A very good car by all accounts. generally costly to run but less so for you, not big inside. If a straight choice it would be a S4 every day so long as you don't do silly miles.

Also consider 3.0tdi A4 if you want better economy.

The V8 in the S4 is simply wonderful. Watch the cabins though- they do not wear the years well.

Plus, AWD usability and stability.

I had a B7 S4 avant (2006), had it for just over 3 years then to free up some cash I sold it an bought a newer Octy vrs. Financially it was a good move as my monthly fuel bill dropped from £500 - 600 per month to £200 - £300 and enabled me to do some major work on my house but I missed it every day. The vrs is a good car but the S4 was in a different league, the interiors do wear well, they are a lot quicker than a standard vrs and a well looked after S4 will still feel like new.

I kept my vrs for just over 2 years and am now back in a new S4, which is even better than my last one. If you don't do high miles then you'll not regret it.

S4 hands down! Although you may become a **** quickly after

S4

S4 would be better but just be prepared about the fuel costs over the Octy.

One of my best mates has a S4 on a 03 plate, the fuel consumption is pretty crap, but it is a 4.2 so you expect that, road tax is a fortune, but you also expect that being four wheel drive, tyres are a fortune, obviously you can get cheap tyres, but all that power and cheap tyres are not going to last long if you like a bit of loud peddle action when Stu juniors not in.

But you get in it and forget about all that, summers day both front windows down and the V8 makes you smile every time, and they are a very quick car, and not to badly priced either ,his interior has no wear what so ever, it's got just over a 100k on the clock, it's never missed a beat in just over 5 year.

S4 all the way I say, if you can afford the bad points

S4, if you can afford to run it with the milage you need to do.

Honest Opinion, is Simples really.

You work for Audi so you know the cars.

You are becoming a Dad, (Congratulations)

so can you afford the Petrol & is this a problem or will it be a problem when fuel gets more expensive?

If not an issue, go with your heart,

if it is going to be tight budget wise & a problem, then the head needs to rule.

Best not to leave the Family hungry or short of trips out, because you have a nice car but no money to go any place in it.

Will you be able to get the Skoda sold privately for a good price?

& get the Audi bought for a bargain price?

(i do not mean will someone do you a trade in, where they want to make money on both cars!

the seller or dealer will be pleased to get shot of the Audi.)

Go for the S4!

Thanks for the honesty guys and opinions.

Fuel wise the missus has a Polo TDi for running to and from her work and shes started a new job (all be it until the wee un arrives) but this is within a 5min walk of my work so if she gets a fixed shift she can drive me too and from work haha!

the fuel and tax are the only things putting me off and also the fact she cant get insured on it but she can on the Octy are the only real "downsides" but having owned and Evo6 which averaged a whopping 18.2mpg i knew the fuel on a 4.2 V8 wouldnt be fantastic.

I really do love the octy though and im just thinking if i live with the S4 as a weekend "toy" will i regret the all day practicality and performance of the octy?

V8 > 2.0

Simples!

S4 but in supercharged 3.0 tfsi form

Just a little difference, price-wise there, john....

indeed BABS - should be relatively future proof in terms of power and torque as you can add 100bhp and 100 lb ft after remap - supposed to do 35 mpg

You're not getting it - on Autotrader: cheapest B6 S4 (4.2 V8) - £5000, cheapest B8 S4 (3.0 V6 TFSI) - £19000

aha, sorry

The Audi V8's are great engines, I am biased of course, however if they go wrong they are very expensive to fix. I have amongst the paperwork with my A8 a single invoice from Audi for more than £3K to replace the oil cooler and other minor work (previous owner thankfully). MPG wise my 3.7 manages a whopping 11 MPG around town, but can get up to around 35 MPG on a run. My A8 is on 180K miles and still runs perfectly, so they are good for intergalactic mileages.

From a Skoda fan if I could afford to run it I'd go for the S4. I really really like and A4 but the same spec A4 avant was £8k+ difference nearly to the octavia!!

If i had the option and didnt care about fuel consumption then it would be S4 all day long. Someones comments about badly wearing interiors seem absurd to me. I have owned one A4 and my dad has had two. All of them where like new after several years of wear and tear. Superbly built. V8 and fit sports exhaust - i would never tire of that noise.

Can you afford a 3.0T S4? If so get one.

I got 44.1mpg on a motorway trip the other day. Granted it was at 60. Better than I got from my VRS!

I know it's probably not in budget but the new S4 is meant to be fantastic for the money.

Contrary to a typical car forum talk.. Spend less on car more on/for the kid to be . Congrats.

I would keep the octy as kids like paint, mud and crayons lol.
