Excessive tyre noise

Featured Replies

Personally I think its 40 and 45 profile tyres that may be a factor. I have driven a few cars with them and generally found them more trouble that they are worth, for a whole host of reasons particularly when you factor in how much more they cost to replace.  I stick to 50/55/60 on my own cars and find them overall easier to live with for day to day motoring.  The Conti Premium Contact 205/55 x16's on my Greenline are completely silent, corner well, are difficult to curb the rims, give me plenty of warning that they are going to let go in hard cornering and are going to last me 50k miles. That is all I ask for.

I agree with all the above, but also, when I last had any reason to look underneath my Superb II, I noticed the front suspension was mounted on a subframe. This was then bolted directly to the body without the rubber bushings/mountings that some other similar cars have. I wonder if this allows more vibration through to the bodyshell? I would expect the Superb (and Golf MK6, Passat, TT which are the same IIRC) arrangement to offer a more-direct steering, and a cheaper build cost for VAG.

Also the front strut springs on many cars have rubber seats at the top and bottom, but on the Superb there is no rubber lower spring seat. I suspect the rubber would prevent suspension 'groaning', but also improve isolation from tyre roar if fitted.

Not that you can do much about these.

As far as I can see, the rear subframe is rubber mounted.

FWIW, I have 205/55 x 16 Goodyears fitted to mine and it's not silent.
