Car revs itself when starting then warning light

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

The VRS has started doing something a little odd.

When starting the odd time it will rev itself (up to maybe 2.5k) and drop straight back down to the proper idle. This will cause the warning light to come on.

After a day or 2 the light goes off. It has done this 3-4 times in the last couple of weeks.

Do not have access to the fault code at the moment.

Thanks.

have the codes read

Is the temp gauge reading ok?

Is glowplug light staying on longer than usual?

Could also be the throttle pedal.

Normally throttle position sensor, not sure on warning light though!

Ok codes as follows

Readiness: N/A

Address 09 -------------------------------------------------------

Controller: 6Q1 937 049 D

Component: 0000 BN-SG. 1S34

2 Faults Found:

01117 - Generator Terminal DF Load Signal

27-00 - Implausible Signal

01598 - Drive Battery Voltage

07-10 - Signal to Low - Intermittent

I cleared them and drove a couple of miles and rechecked, only the DF load signal one remains. The car has not put the warning light on since making this post though.

The DF Load signal one is the wiring connector at the front bottom of the engine bay. Very very very common problem. Basically the wires break and you need to patch some new wire in.

They control the alternator charging circuit and tell the car how much power the alternator is putting out. The alternator won't start charging until the engine is revved a bit (I think about 2500 or more revs) causing a low battery unless the engine is revved over this to start charging.

Do a search and it should come up with a guide on how to fix.

Phil

You might find your coolant temp sensor will go shortly (just replaced mine) as I had the revving when starting at the same time as mine went.

Keep an eye on how long your glowplug light stays on when cold, also your temp gauge reading erratically.
